The seven sins do not just apply to architecture and have their counterpart in other fields of artistic endeavour. They are especially poignant in the case of architecture however because of a completed commissions high public exposure and longevity of presence. An objectionable or poorly designed or just plain ugly building will irritate those who must live with on it a continuous basis. Robert Adam's book is delightfully written and should be a must read for every architectural student and the dogmatic modernists in the profession should also take note.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful and Insightful! 12 Dec 2010

The 7 Sins of Architects by Robert Adam, illustrated by Louis Hellman from Building Magazine.

ISBN 978-0-9564146-1-8

It can be bought at [...] (click on book title) for £6.00 plus £1.50 post and packing (including to the US) - that is about $12.00. Yay in pounds Sterling and Paypal does the exchange.

This is a HUGELY fun and very entertaining book.

The Seven Sins which most in the audience will recognize are Elitism, Conceit, Egotism,, Dogmatism, Ignorance, Incompetence and Profligacy, plus there are chapters on Greenwash and Pastiche.

Anyone who has been an architect or used one will easily recognise one or more situations.

Perhaps the one line that I so appreciated was in Robert Adam's first for The Third Sin Egotism: "How can you spot a genius when you see one? There aren't many about so eliminating non-geniuses is a good start." That really hit home with me, because the term genius is way, way overused.

I have only known three geniuses in my lifetime. One was a Nobel Laureate, another won an equivalent award from the same Institute. The third was a British literary scholar who had an amazing, 50+ year career.

This is a great little tome which Robert has packed a lot of fun into.
