This is a good quality album and represents excellent value. The early tracks are mostly unknown singles which were released but promptly bombed. Most of these are by the band's original line-up, which included Denny Laine, and are very 'American blues' in character. I somehow don't think you'll love every one of these early efforts, but I think some you will.
The difference in the band's direction and quality when Justin Hayward joined them is astoundingly evident in the change of music and, yes, some of those later still-failed singles will indeed delight you and perhaps make you wonder how on earth the music-buying public missed them the first time around!
But suddenly you're listening to <i>Nights In White Satin</i>, the band's enormous, worldwide hit, and it's followed by a whole series of knock-'em-dead numbers that are well-known to Moody Blues fans everywhere. Perhaps surprisingly, the band only ever had one Number One record (<i>Question</i>) but almost everything from their heyday was pure musical gold and this album gives a generous cut of that.
Its final ten tracks are from the band's later period (after they reformed, up to 2000) when their sound was less inspired and the acclaim of their earlier years eluded them. Yet the tracks chosen from that period are mostly good and do not disgrace the bulk of the album. It's an unusual album in that some of the tracks are not actually by The Moody Blues but are from the band's solo efforts. One of them, <i>Forever Autumn</i>, was never released under any of the band's names!
Those of you who have no or just a few Moody Blues' albums would enjoy this album for its broad musical brush of their prodigious output. Die-hard fans will already have most of these tracks on the full-version albums, but two of the tracks here have never been released elsewhere, so it still makes it very tempting to collectors.
And, like I said, it's very cheap.

This is the collection made for those fans that are `singles' oriented. Every Moody Blues single and B-Side from 1965 through 1988 is included here. The Moody Blues often included a choice album cut for their B-Sides rather than a mediocre album track. You can see from the list that the best is here. There is always going to be a missing song from `any' collection, but it also a showcase for the songs they thought would be best representative from that time period. Please note that they expected the lovely, "Watching and Waiting" to be a huge hit on par with , "Nights In White Satin" but it only charted modestly. This collection contains twenty-one Billboard charted hits as well as those that didn't quite make it. Even if you have the "Time Traveler" Box Set, this double disc in invaluable. Unfortunately, it is not Remastered - yet.

Although this album is reasonably priced and includes a couple of tracks not available elsewhere on Moody Blues CDs, the sound quality is poor in places and the master tapes used are not those from the digital remasters of the first seven albums released in the late nineties. The master used for some of the tracks seems to be the tapes for 'This is the Moody Blues' where some of the tracks used run into each other (and are in a different order), and as a result there are some clumsy edits. There are also a lot of errors on the sleeve notes. Apart from the tracks not available elsewhere, there are much better Moodies compilations available.
