This release seems to have two purposes:
One is to recapture the nostalgia of the time when most fans of this great band had vinyls. But for so many, we missed out on some of the great covers that went along with the singles because we bought albums. I still think that the coverdesign has an esstentiell value that represent the music. Pictures is in this age of information flood through Internet more importened than ever to identify with the artists and what they represent. Thus is the value that fans now have the chance to have all their singles in a box instead of just have them spread as vinyls that we never play anyway.

And also to connect with new audiences and a new generation that wants to learn how this band developed as a singles band through the years. I totally agree in J Milners review. This shows that music is more importened than just fast spreads through a mp3 generation. I don't mind the format (I have iPod with covers of every album), but this music is far more importened and is worth to be recognised with a good package.

Though I miss information about the songs and their chart history (as it was supposed to in the begining when Queens archivist Greg Brooks started out this project). Maybe it's expensive - but the time and effort behind it are worth it. Looking forward to vol. 2, 3 and 4.

OK, let's clear up a few things from the other reviews: yes, this is material most of us have on other CDs, yes this is expensive and yes it would've been better to release a single rarities complilation CD. However ... if you're a Queen completist like myself, this is the collection I've been waiting for! At last we get the 7" versions of those b-sides and at last we get a decent remastered version of that elusive track, "See What a Fool I've Been". I can't wait for the second box set in June 2009 which will feature the likes of the 7" version of Back Chat and such rare b-sides as "I Go Crazy". If you want it all on one easy to play collection, do what I do and complile them in Media Player and burn them onto one or two discs. Then you can play them in the car. No doubt a rarities compilation will be released one day but this will definitely do for now. The only slight gripe I have is that I would have liked all the sleeves to be the UK versions and the labels to copy the original EMI designs. But these are minor gripes. This is the best band in the world and their best music ever. Enjoy ... and bring on Volume 2!

Mr N D Harris seems to miss the point of this box set. This isn't supposed to replicate the Greatest Hits album or indeed be treated as such. I would guess that every person who buys this already has the songs on other albums. The whole point of this is simple - Nostalgia. These songs were issued as singles back in the days when singles actually meant something. Speaking from personal experience I would eagerly await the issue of a new single and, more often than not, would buy them even if I had the song on an LP. In these days of characterless MP3s and the obsession with quantity not quality there is very little to appeal to the serious music enthusiast who, as well as being a fan of the music, is also interested in the packaging. These type of releases serve two purposes - they help fans, like myself, relive their youth in a purposefully indulgent way and also allow the presentation of a product in a more exciting way than just a random compressed file on a computer. I, for one, applaud Queen and EMI for the effort and attention they have put into this project. My only criticism of the product is the price. It is WAY too expensive.
I hope labels keep on issuing products such as this. Some of us (quite a few by what I have ascertained) regard packaging as an essential part of music products. We are constantly ridiculed by the media for being old fashioned in our wish to hang on to paper and plastic. The MP3 has reduced music to a disposable commodity and I refuse to acknowledge it as a format. How refreshing to see a product that is unashamedly 'old-fashioned'. Long may it continue.

forget nostalgia
How many times are Queen gonna release the same songs to their fans? The serious fans will have the vinyls, the casual fans have greatest hits.

Not buying.
