This "Greatest Hits" collection was released on the back of the surprise #1 "Young at Heart". The song was used for a car advert and the group were gifted a massive hit. Unfortunately they had already split up some years earlier. Nevertheless this CD is a good summary of their career. The Bluebells were formed around the nucleus of the 2 McCluskey Brothers, and Robert ("Bobby Bluebell") Hodgens. They emerged at around the same time as fellow Scot popsters, Aztec Camera, Orange Juice and Altered Images. However The Bluebells always had a folk side to their jangling pop. On the whole the songs have aged pretty well, although a couple of the earlier tunes are a little on the slight side e.g "Forever More". Besides "Young at Heart" (included here in an extended version"), hit singles such as "Cath", and, in particular "I'm Falling" catch the ear. The real shame is that London Records have not given the re-released, remastered, bonus track treatment to "Sisters", the band's first and only proper LP. If Bronski Beat and the Redskins are worthy of it then so too are The Blubells. Where are they now? Ken and David McCluskey record and tour as the rather excellent "McCluskey Brothers";sometime bassist Lawrence Donegan writes for quality broadsheets;sometime guitarist Craig Gannon went on to play for The Smiths amongst others; and Bobby has found fortune writing hits for the one time washed up "Texas". Funny old world.
