Product Description

Johnny Cash died in 2003 but, more than a decade later, the legacy of his music-making lives on. He is remembered as a groundbreaking figure across genres as diverse as country and western, gospel and rock'n'roll, and his iconic status will undoubtedly endure. These singles recorded for Sun Records between 1955 and 1958 reflect the early aspirations and raw songwriting talent that would go on to influence generations.

5.0 out of 5 stars Early Johnny Cash... 9 Sep 2014
By C. FULLER TOP 50 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:Audio CD
Johnny Cash, The Sun Singles Collection, NOT2CD551

Not Now Music continues their series of label releases with this latest set.

John R "Johnny" Cash (1932 – 2003) was a singer/songwriter, actor, and author. To most people he was a giant of country music. This 2 CD set features many of his early recordings...

The Johnny Cash Sun Records discography shows the music recorded and released on Sun Records from late 1954 to July, 1958, Cash recorded for Sun Records, a label founded by Sam Phillips and located at Sun Studio in Memphis, Tennessee. He left Sun for Columbia in July, 1958. Sun continued to release singles from their sessions until 1964.

The recordings met with excellent sales and the following went to Number 1 on the C&W chart...

May 01, 1956 241 A side..."I Walk The Line" B side..."Get Rhythm"

Nov. 21, 1956 258 A side..."There You Go" B side..."Train Of Love"

Dec. 01, 1957 283 A side..."Ballad of a Teenage Queen" B side..."Big River"

May 20, 1958 295 A side..."Guess Things Happen That Way" B side..."Come In Stranger"

All the releases from 1955 to 1962 are included on this 2 CD set. The liner notes are by Helen Akitt. Excellent sound transfers and great value. Nicely packaged with photographic images.

Running times are CD1...48.02 and CD2...38.03

5.0 out of 5 stars JC's roots 13 Sep 2014
By Tony Martin TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD
The roots of Johnny Cash, an icon of country music, kicking off with "Hey Porter!/Cry! Cry! Cry!" (Sun 221), here ending with "Blue Train/Born To Lose" (Sun 376), a total of 38 tracks across 19 singles, A's and B's, 1955/58. By no means definitive, it clocks up many hits - "Folsom Prison Blues", "I Walk The Line", "Ballad Of A Teenage Queen" (which he apparently detested), others. Classic stuff, by mid-'58 he was at Columbia, I'm sure you know the tale from there. This a cheap intro to a true legend.
