Much can be said about the music and lyrics and who plays what, but sit back in a quiet place, turn up the volume and listen to the track "Heroes". Enjoy the sound and accoustic depth. It will touch something in most of us, and that is what enjoyment of music is all about.

Severely Underrated 9 Aug 2006
By DSR VINE™ VOICE
Format:Audio CD
I can fully understand those fans of Camel's Moonmadness era not being overly fond of this album. Superficially it seems slightly "commercial" or "pop" compared to the soft "Prog Rock" albums of old. I wasn't over keen on this release at the time - too young and naive - . I would very respectfully suggest, however, that this is one heck of an introspective effort for a band that was going through some agonising changes and the sentiments contained within the music grow on one with time and maturity...

The comparison of some of these tracks with those by The Alan Parsons Project is inevitable as both "groups" were recording at Abbey Road at the same time (see Camel's website for full story). Indeed, a couple of 'Parsons regulars joined Andy Latimer for the subsequent tour, so it's not surprising to me that a bit of cross pollination occured as the tracks were written and recorded.

The music here grows over the years. "Camelogue" just about sums it up I think. As ever, the production is first class and a bit more "up to date" compared with the lean and dry productions of the mid seventies.

Definitely a Camel album to savour and one I can now comfortably recommend...

I got into Camel a couple of years ago and gradually bought their back catalogue. I'd put off getting this one as it seemed to have the tag of Camel's worst album. Being a bit of a completist I recently decided to take the plunge, but frankly I was worried that it would be dreadful. I was extremely relieved therefore when I discovered that it is an eminently listenable album. The sounds and textures of the music are very nice. I imagine that the reason why there was negativity about this album was that it was the next one after "Nude", which is arguably their best ever album. "Nude" was an amazingly crafted concept album which was more sophisticated than their previous releases, and it was always going to be a hard act to follow. Fans expecting "Single Factor" to be Nude part 2 were always going to be disappointed as this was no concept album, but an individual collection of songs. It remains a very good album, more melodic than prog, granted, but I'm pleased that it's finally part of my CD collection.

Decent, commercially leaning album
This does not live up to the high standards Andrew latimer has always set for Camel, but is still a pleasant album worth owning. Read more

HEROES!!!
After the highly conceptual Nude, came The Single Factor, which was a return to the more commercial type efforts Camel made in the late seventies. Read more

Not the best .........
This is by far the weakest Camel album. The songs are OK but are too far towards the "pop" side of rock. There is no depth, no meat in most of the songs. Read more
