More About the Author

Julia Donaldson, the 2011-2013 Children's Laureate, is the outrageously talented, prize-winning author of the world's most-loved picture books including The Gruffalo and What the Ladybird Heard.

The Gruffalo, illustrated by Axel Scheffler, is now a children's classic and publishing phenomenon; celebrating 15 years in 2014, selling over 3 million copies worldwide, was voted Great Britain's favourite bedtime story on BBC Radio 2 and was adapted and broadcast as an animation on BBC 1 on Christmas Day 2009. The Gruffalo's Child and Room on the Broom are now also films, with Room on the Broom shortlisted for an Academy Award in 2014. Julia Donaldson's most recent books with Axel Scheffler include Superworm (2012), Highway Rat (2011), Tabby McTat (2010), Stick Man (2009) and Tiddler (2008).

Julia Donaldson has also published work with David Roberts, Nick Sharratt, Emily Gravett, Rebecca Cobb, and Lydia Monks. Her collaboration with Lydia Monks began in 2003, with the first collection of Princess Mirror-Belle stories. The fabulously glittery Sugarlump and the Unicorn is their sixth, and most recent, picture book collaboration. She also writes poems, plays, songs and fiction for older children and, together with her husband Malcolm, has performed her wonderful stage shows all over the world.

There are so many wonderful Julia Donaldson stories available and this one is as lyrical as ever. The first thing that you notice of course is the glitter and my two daughters (aged 4 and 5) think that this is a fantastic book. Each and every page has glitter and not just a token amount either. The glitter isn't randomly spread, but has been used to highlight characters, their clothes, scenery, marine-life and much, much more.

The glitter is all just an added bonus to the beautiful illustrations (by Lydia Monk), which are bright and fun, with lots of enchanting little details, so that there is always something new to spot, no matter how many times you re-read the book. If you have read "What the Ladybird Heard" or "Sharing a Shell", which are collaborations by the same writer and illustrator, then you'll not be disappointed by their new offering.

Apart from being sparkly, the glittery areas area also slightly raised and bumpy, which delighted my girls as they kept running their fingers over the page to find more glittery patches. An added bonus is that the glitter seems to be well attached to the book and doesn't shed everywhere (as it often seems to with greetings cards!)

The story itself includes the singing mermaid (naturally) and a misguided decision to trust the promises of a good old fashioned greedy villain named Sam Sly, the owner of a circus. Whilst it is clear that Sly Sam is the bad guy, the writing and the illustration don't make him a frightening figure, which is a relief when you want a good bedtime story! As you would expect, there is a wonderfully happy ending following a daring and challenging escape - all thanks to the Singing Mermaid's friends, both old and new.

5.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful book 29 Mar 2012
By Mr. L. N. Taylor VINE VOICE
Format:Hardcover|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
As you would expect from this super childrens author, this is a very entertaining, rhyming, childrens story. The illustrations are lavish, beautiful and glittery. The story is about a little mermaid who is tricked into joining a circus, and the cruel circus owner keeps her in a fish tank, forcing her to sing for the crowds. Eventually, with the help of a friend she manages to escape back to the sea. I would suggest this book (like the Gruffalo) is suitable for ages between 3 and 8. Theres just enough text for a cosy bedtime read with a rhyme on each page. My daughter loves it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning book and wonderful to read 11 April 2013
By Sarah Durston TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:Paperback
We've long been fans of Julia Donaldson and always look forward to her latest releases, but I have to say that this is one of my favourites so far.

The mermaid has a beautiful singing voice enjoyed by all the sea creatures and birds until one day she is heard by a Circus owner who lures her away with promises of a marble pool and the chance to sleep in feather bed. The sea creatures try to warn her he is lying but she goes anyway and despite making friends at the circus, she is unhappy because she is kept in a fish tank where there isn't room to swim. The mermaid will need the help of her new friends if she is to escape back to the sea.

As you would expect with one of Julia Donaldson's books, the rhyming story is creative and beautiful to read. The stand out thing for me was the illustrations. The book is incredibly bright and vibrant, the pictures are interesting and really add to the story. There is glitter detail on each page but it avoids being `girlie' to the point where it would exclude boys.

Both my children (boy and girl) have enjoyed this book at bedtime and I've enjoyed reading it. A win all round!

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book for boys too! 18 Jun 2012

I was concerned that it might be girly, but my little boy loves this book! There is a lot of scope for discussion in the settings and characters. The prose is clever and engaging, and the illustrations are delightful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant book 21 May 2012
Format:Hardcover
Some other reviewers here have commented that this is a more girly book. As the mother of a four year old boy and 2.5 year old girl, I can say both were equally enchanted by this book. I am not sure exactly which parts of the book some deemed as being "girly" - the glitter or the central character of the Singing Mermaid.

The story line is absolutely superb and the illustrations by Lydia Monks complements this perfectly. A brilliant collaboration and a perfect result. We love Julia Donaldson in our house and we have most of her books with various collaborators i.e. David Roberts, Axel Scheffler and Lydia Monks. I would say that this is definitely one of her best work.

Our children love it and after just three readings, can finish some sentences in the book. Their attention is on the book from start to finish. From a parent's perspective (and I speak for both myself and my husband), it is easy to read. I bet it will even make you smile when you have finished the last paragraph.

Buy the book, you will not regret it!

3.0 out of 5 stars Lovely pictures 18 Mar 2012
By Sam M VINE VOICE
Format:Hardcover|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
This book is written in Julia Donaldson's usual rhyming style and has lovely, bright pictures. Unfortunately, I was disappointed by it and believe that there are other Julia Donaldson stories which are much, much better. The lovely pictures do make up for the story and my daughter loves looking at them and feeling the glitter, which is a nice addition to each page. However, if you like Julia Donaldson, read one of her other books!
