Book Description

1 Oct 2011 Jaswinder Singh 1
The first in a series of multi-cultural thrillers by the author of Silent Night and The Devil's Tears. Detective Jaswinder Singh, known as the Jazz Singher (Jazz to his friends and enemies), is leaner, fitter, smarter and back working for the Met. The nervous breakdown that caused him to be seconded to Manchester is, he believes, now behind him - but he is still battling his personal demon, drink. Jazz's first case back at the Met comes dangerously close to home as he investigates the Viets - a gang quietly setting up East End Cannabis factories and trying to stay under the radar of the holy trinity of East End gangs; the Snake heads, Triad and Bam Bam. The murder of a sweet and innocent old lady, Alice, is the catalyst for the gangs to clash, causing the biggest East End war since the Krays. For Jazz it becomes personal - Alice had been part of his Newbury Park childhood. He goes on the rampage to find her killers. What started with the murder of a little old lady spirals out of control into serial murder, lies, duplicity and treachery, culminating in the death of a rookie Detective Constable on Jazz's team. This is the first book in a new crime series featuring Jaswinder Singh, a driven and brilliant Sikh detective, working in the East End of London.

Another winning book from this author but by far the best yet. Great storyline and in depth knowledge of the area this crime thriller set in. Edge of the seat stuff at times and difficult to put down a real page turner! Looking forward to reading their next offering which I believe has just been published. This book would make a terrific film!!! 10 out of 10 for me!

5.0 out of 5 stars Singh is definitely on song! 24 Sep 2013

Good read from an author who obviously knows what she's talking about. The area and police procedures and culture are very well drawn. Well ploted a good twist. Gives an interesting look into Sikh culture too, which is often overlooked in the huge coverage of Islam. The characters would certainly make a good TV series. I look forward to future installments!

Slightly gripping in place but could put the book down. Some predictable stuff with a nice twist to the finish.

4.0 out of 5 stars The plot thickens 2 Mar 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Having very recently read this book and have no idea of the authors other works I was suitably impressed.

Not knowing the area in which the action takes place I would have liked a more descriptive narrative so that I could see the places involved.

I could not picture the main character, or associate with him.

But after saying that, the other characters jumped out of the book at me. Particularly the druggies, ( it would be good to see him in other books) and the tubby slovenly detective Boomer. Also the baddie's character is very well drawn.

The second meeting between Radley and Singh is brilliant and unexpected. It also stick in my memory which can only be good.

Parts of the book I found seemed to have been written with real feeling.

The plot is fantastic and comes from a very fertile mind. I can not expand on that as I don't want to give the plot away. Suffice to say I have seen films and read books with plots a lot thinner than this one.

The book start slowly but once into it, it fairly romps away.

With any book I find if you come away from it after learning something it is a bonus.
This novel reached that expectation.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I was grabbed on the very first page and couldn't put it down until I finished the entire book.
The plot was masterful and gripping, the writing excellent. A cracking good read and I shall most certainly have to get hold of the rest of the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Astounding detail 23 Jan 2013

I spent my informative teenage years in Ilford and the authors attention to detail on the geographical area and the diversity of its residents was so precise it was almost shocking. This with the excellent story line made for a brilliant read. I did not put it down until I had finished

5.0 out of 5 stars Gripping read 9 Sep 2012

I hope this is the first of many in this style. The storyline has you hooked from the first pages with intrigue and suspense relating that the main characters past and a tag of Jonah that he was trying so hard to leave behind. The author has mastered the ability to shock the reader with revelations that twists the storyline on its head making it difficult to put the book down. A real page turner and a brilliant read!
