Manufacturer's Description

The game that first opened up the world of video games to a wider audience is back, going beyond being just a virtual dollhouse to a complete interactive neighbourhood. The basic concept is still the same though, as you create your own computerised family and help (or hinder) them in achieving their lifetime dreams.
This sim's charisma rating isn't quite as high as he thinks
The rest of town is now just as interactive as your sims' home
As ever, different sims have very different desires
Manage your sims' lives from baby to old age pensioner

Instead of just dealing with one house at a time though, your whole sims town is part of one continuous map, with neighbours going about their business independently. Likewise your own family can explore at will and interact with any and all buildings and people.

Once fully grown a sim can have up to 60 personality traits - from loner to flirt - all of which you can influence via their environment and the people they interact with. However you want to play and whatever you want to do it's easier than ever to create your own virtual soap opera.

Key Features
  • Instant expansion: The game includes many feature from the The Sims 2 expansions from the off, including personal inventories, pets, private cars, restaurants and gardening.
  • Sims in the mood: Monitor your sim's six moodlets - hunger, bladder, energy, social, hygiene and fun - to see how they're feeling and what they want to do.
  • Life goals: Every sim has their own wishes and opportunities, including a main lifetime wish - it's up to you whether you help them towards it or purposefully confound them.
  • Wide world: The giant game world not only looks better than ever but means that your sim is no longer just tied to their house, but is able to interact with the whole town.
  • Virtual makeover: The Create-A-Sims tool is more flexible than ever, with the ability to alter weight, fitness, hair and clothing down to the tiniest detail - including freckles and birthmarks!
About the Developer: EA Redwood Shores
Situated in the same San Francisco bay area as EA's main headquarters, the Redwood Shores studio has created many licensed games including The Godfather and The Simpsons Game - as well as original titles such as Dead Space. In 2004 it was merged with The Sims creator Maxis.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great game, great price, nice extras 29 April 2011

Well I have to be honest and say that I'm a huge Sims fan and I can't quite believe that Amazon are selling this edition quite so cheaply as it was a limited edition. However the reason that they still have stock left seems to be this ABYSMAL description page that doesn't state clearly what you're actually getting for your money, so I'll swoop in to the rescue ;)

The Sims 3 commemorative edition is a limited edition version of the core Sims 3 game (NOT an expansion pack so the system specs are identical to the base Sims 3 game. I will not bother to list them here, look them up) which comes in a lovely hard-backed cardboard case as opposed to the usual plastic one. As well as the standard game (and the usual 1000 free Sims points you get for registering) you also get a hard-backed book with some information on the history of the sims, some details on the roots of 'Simlish' (the language spoken by the Sims) and some other assorted Sims-related info. The book contains a couple of small posters which to be honest aren't particularly impressive and a little bit of card which you can fold to create your own plumbob (the green diamond thing that hovers over selected Sims). Finally, you get a code to download a special honeycomb-shaped bookshelf from the Sims 3 online store for free. I assume this item is only available to owners of this edition of the game.

Overall if they were charging much more than the basic Sims 3 game for this edition then I'd advise against getting it, as the 'extras' are a bit underwhelming. The nice case is probably the best thing about it.

Amazon is currently selling this version for ~£5 cheaper than "The Sims 3". It IS the full game, but you also get a few bits extra. Included is a small book, some artwork, a small poster, a green diamond, and 1000 credits for the store. None of which are particularly good or interesting but its cheaper anyway. Buy this not the other one!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Gotta love sims 3 10 Dec 2012

I just love sims 3. And this game was everything that the original is but with a few cool extra bits, and its cheaper than the normal one. I've no idea who came up with that logic but take advantage and buy it!

Probably should of done a bit more research before buying, I must admit I am a lover of the original Sims format, and the whole 3D thing just makes it more complicated than it needs to be.

I bought this only two weeks ago as I couldn't believe Amazon were only selling it for £20. However, it seems like they have cottoned on to this and have put the price up to an eyewateringly expensive £40.

I love the Sims 3. I have never played any of the other SIMS games before, but got hooked on this after I played the iPhone version. I won't go into gameplay as there are other reviews that can explain all that better than I can.

However. This version has a lot of little extras with it. You get a book about the history of the SIMS, an explanation of Simlish, artwork, a cardboard plumbob, and there is a voucher inside to claim some free stuff. THIS EXPIRED ON 31/12/11 so its no longer valid. As with the others, you get 1000 free simpoints to spend in the EA store on stuff for your SIMS.

What I came here to say was, this was an absolute gem of a bargain at £20, but now I've just noticed the price has gone up, It's not worth buying for all the fancy stuff. Get the cheaper regular version instead. You get the same 1000 simpoints anyway. Boo Amazon. You should have kept this at the lower price.

I completely agree with G Patterson's review. I've noticed, since buying this edition of The Sims 3 last year, it has featured in Amazon's catalogue at varying prices, sometimes as expensive as the base game edition, sometimes a lot cheaper. I would happily recommend this edition as a real bargain whenever it is available at a cheaper price. You get the bonus hardback book G Patterson mentions, all the features which come with registration at EA, and you also get the normal introductory game manual which comes with the base game - so really everything is a plus.

I'd like to add that I really loved the hardback book, also called "The Sims 3 Commemorative Edition". It's a clever celebration of the Sims - not just Sims 3 but the whole genesis and development of the game over three eras. It includes a nice Q&A with creator Will Wright (who confirms amongst other things that the first thing almost everyone does when they get The Sims is craft representations of themselves!), a fascinating piece on Simlish and the various recording artists who have recorded their songs in Simlish for The Sims, and nice features on the psychology of The Sims and how international the game really is. (When you become aware of the incredible span of ages, nationalities and cultures who love this game it's always good to reflect on its psychology!) So I found the book a great little freebie.

As for the virtues of Sims 3 over Sims 2, it seems some folk still debate this. I'm amazed. Just restricting comment to the core Sims 3 game and not the expansions, the graphics are stunning, particular the close-up detail, the water effects, sea surf and sunrises, but I found the most brilliant aspect to be each town's autonomy.
