Reviews

The longest-running primetime animated series in history, The Simpsons is also a cultural institution. Now in its 14th season, The Simpsons has an extremely loyal and dedicated fan base worldwide. Intelligently written, subversively humorous and delightfully witty, the show pokes fun at itself and everything in its wake.

This season's stellar guest voices include rock 'n' roll legends Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Lenny Kravitz, Tom Petty, Elvis Costello and Brian Setzer. Also paying Springfield a visit are Elliott Gould, Marisa Tomei, Little Richard and the dynamic duo of Adam West and Burt Ward. Pro skateboarding legend Tony Hawk and alternative rock band Blink 182 will lend their voices to the historic 300th episode.

The season itself is better than I remembered it. Had plenty of laughs so far, although it could be that each season is worse than the one that proceeded it, so this one looks pretty good so far compared to season nineteen. However, the packaging, agh, I experienced a skipping of the episode "Pray Anything" on disc 2, most likely due to the absurd cardboard packaging. Also, the glue that is supposed to keep the packaging together keeps coming undone on the inner section that's supposed to hold the booklet in place. So, I have to keep pressing it back down and hoping the glue will stay in place, but it's already come unstuck twice now, so...oh, and there were glue on the fourth disc that I had to peel off. Hopefully the disc will play okay, but doubtful. Terrible packaging, but a season that is still quite up there with Simpsons' quality.

The episodes in this season are really good, however I wanted my review to be about the packaging.

From season 11 onwards the packaging for each season has been poor and cheaply made, although the animation and themes on the packaging has been good, the cardboard that is used is very flimsy. The slots to put the DVDs in are very tight and difficult to remove the DVDs from. Also over time (as seen in other seasons) the packaging begins to tear and look old.

PS. The only reason I did not give this 5 stars is because of the packaging.

This is a mixed bag of episodes, the show was struggling by this season though I do continue to collect and enjoy these boxsets and the commentaries are fantastic.
I found this boxset in a well known supermarket (Starts with a T) on 4th October, no other shop or website has it for sale until 10th of October, so I bought it instantly.
As I said the episodes are hit and miss but the special features are excellent as always.
But...the packaging is done in the same style as seasons 11 to 13. Lovely artwork inside (Treehouse Of Horror themed!) and a nice booklet(as always), but the discs are tucked into the horrible cardboard sleeve again, why hasn't somebody at Fox listened to the fans?
The sleeves are a slight bit looser than previous three seasons, none of my four discs were scratched this time but as before I'm almost afraid to touch them as the packaging and DVDs could be so easily damaged. What I do is leave the four discs in empty CD cases, and when I finished watching all four then return them to the packaging and back onto my DVD shelf.
Although there has been a dip in the quality of the episodes, and the packaging on the past 4 seasons are pretty horrible, The Simpsons complete season boxsets have turned into a great collection and Im glad to add another season at last.
Oh and Kang's (or is it Kudos'?) eye on the front of the packaging is reflective gold and looks pretty cool!

The sharp decline that The Simpsons suffered in the early noughties is glaringly evident in this lackluster season. Of the 22 episodes a few are well-written and smart, a few are lazily-written and boring, and the rest are forgettable without being particularly bad. The first episode (Treehouse of Horror 13) is horrible, despite a promising opening. Things do not improve with episode 2, featuring unnaturally shoehorned-in guest appearances by The Rolling Stones and other aging rockers. We've already seen Homer interact with these types in the Season 12 episode 'A Tale of Two Springfields'. It's just an easily recycled gimmick that fails to make for a memorable episode. As for the other 20...well, when you browse through your Simpsons collection looking for a classic episode, you will never pick out Season 14.

The production design of the package is lovely. Fox have gone for a Halloween theme for this one and it looks great. The Blu Ray presents each episode in 1.33:1 1080p with DTS HD-MA sound. There are a decent amount of extras, which are entertaining. But the best of them is the fact that disc 3 contains two Treehouse of Horror episodes (V and VI) from 1994 and 1995. These episodes are actually the best Treehouse of Horrors (V was heavily cut in the UK due to the gore and violence), and I suspect they were included to make up for the fact that the Halloween episode in Season 14 was so bad. I should also point out that Treehouse of Horror V and VI look much better on Blu Ray than their DVD counterparts, proving that earlier seasons could benefit from being released on the format. But since Fox have been releasing The Simpsons to the home video market since 2001 and are only at Season 14 I wouldn't hold your breath.

Always perfect. If you haven't seen The Simpsons family you haven't experience the world of art, completely. For me The Simpsons, is fine art.
