5.0 out of 5 stars The following tale of alien encounters is true. 14 Mar 2000
Format:VHS Tape
"Secrets and Lies" could be an alternative title for this Simpsons collection, since the mysteries that aren't secret all turn out to be fakes! In 'The Springfield Files', Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny play the X-Files agents Scully and Mulder, investigating Homer's claim of seeing aliens in the woods (after 10 beers!). In 'Homer the Great', Homer is chosen to be the leader of a secret Mason-type cult. 'Lisa the Iconoclast' shows Lisa discovering that the town's founder (Jebediah Springfield) was really a cutthroat pirate, and in 'Homer Badman' the serious issue of sexual harassment is tackled (Homer didn't really do it).

My favourite quote is from 'The Springfield Files', where Leonard Nimoy bizarrely introduces the episode: "I'm Leonard Nimoy. The following tale of alien encounters is true. And by 'true', I mean 'false'. It's all lies. But they're entertaining lies. And in the end, isn't that the real truth? The answer is... 'No'"

3.0 out of 5 stars Not a great Simpsons video 25 April 2000
By A Customer
Format:VHS Tape
The Simpson's are the funniest TV show I've ever seen, and this is a great video, don't get me wrong, but by The Simpson's high standards, it's mediocre. The Springfield Files is good, guest starring X-File's Mulder and Scully and containing a hilarious introduction from Lenard Nimoy, but it isn't an episode that you'd want to watch over and over action. After about four of five times, it loses it's 'oomph'. This tape also contains two episodes that have been replayed on BBC Two far too often; Homer The Great (The one were Homer joins the Stone Cutters) and Homer Badman (Were Homer is excused of sexual harrasment). Homer The Great is an okay episode, but the fact that it is far too much about Homer than a usual Homer episode lets it down. Homer Badman is good, though, and it's the kind of episode you don't get tired of easily. But, it's been on BBC Two loadsa times. Lisa The Iconolaust is another mediocre episode. It's okay, but Lisa-based episodes do get a bit dull at times. There's no denying that The Simpson's is the greatest thing since the big bang, but this is a collection of dissapointing episodes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Matt Groening does it again 17 Mar 2004
Format:VHS Tape
Dark secrets is a great simpsons video for all fans. The 4 episodes included are :

The Springfield Files
This episode is probably the best on the video and features a hilarious intro from Leonard Nimoy.
[I would give it 5/5]

Homer The Great
This is the stonecutters one. It has many funny one-liners and is one that never gets boring. It is my least favourite on the video and that is saying something.
[4/5]

Lisa The Iconoclast
One that has not been on BBC 2 for a while, so new viewers might enjoy it more. It is my fav Lisa-based episode but Homer's sub-plot is a gem.
[4.5/5]
Homer Badman
The script-writers are on top form in this brilliant Homer episode which has some hilarious moments on the simpson TV
[5/5]

This is a superb video but one negative is that after loads of viewings, it becomes boring.

But, it is a vital purchase for any simpsons fans.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Simpsons reveals its dark secrets to all! 16 July 2004
By Ben
Format:DVD
This single DVD disc contains four sub standard episodes of Springfields favourite family, 88 minutes of Simpsons! However there are as usual no special features, the four episodes included are already available on VHS and the price for four episodes is quite expensive, RRp of £15.99. I think, that in future collections there should be MORE than four episodes: and some of the newer ones too. Its not the episodes aren't good, because they are but if you have Sky, you can just tape the Simpsons twice daily. But seens as Simpsons is no longer showing on terrestrial TV, the avid skyless Simpsons fan will be desperate to snatch up this collection. The episodes are as as follows:

THE SPRINGFIELD FILES: On a drunken alk home Homer sees an Extra Terrestrial alien and when the residents of Springfield don't believe him, he seeks to prove himself. Moulder and Scully make a guest appearance as FBI agents: great spoof of the X Files. ****

HOMER THE GREAT: Homer is shocked to discover that he is the chosen one in a select group known as the Stone Cutters. *****

LISA THE ICONOLIST: A good story weakened by the considerable lack of humour. On doing a project on the town's founder, Jepadiah Springfield Lisa discovers that he is a freud. ***

HOMER BADMAN: Homer is accused of sexually harasing a babysitter and he is desperate to clear his name. ***

All in all, not a bad batch of episodes but they could be better, there could be more, it could be less expensive: having said that, what the hell - it's the Simpsons after all!

Regardless of what anyone says, you can watch these episodes over... and over... and over... and over... and over again- believe me; I've watched all sixteen of the individual videos at least sixteen times each- they are lovely just to have on in the background while you do something on the computer, they're even better to stick in the VCR while you're in bed, and best of all: THEY-WILL-NEVER-GET-TIRESOME.

I thoroughly recommend buying all sixteen videos to compile into a library- it allows you to just sit indoors and still have a great time.

Brilliant.
