Book Description

1 Sep 2008
Celtic calligraphy is an instantly recognizable style that epitomizes the ideal of Celtic craftsmanship, from intricate knotwork, animals snaking into the loops of illuminated letters or a script carved in wood or etched on stone. With the help of this practical guide, you can learn to write the key Celtic scripts and create projects to treasure. Calligrapher Fiona Graham-Flynn presents 18 calligraphy projects that are great for beginners and improvers, too. Start with a name plaque for a child's room, create greetings cards with a Celtic blessing, decorate a lampshade or paint some fairy wishing stones in gold for your garden. All the techniques you need are included A- Uncial, Half-uncial and Runic scripts, along with how to draw zoomorphics, or the beautiful animal ornamentation often seen in illuminated letters.

3.0 out of 5 stars A surface sprinkling of Celtic flavour 14 July 2012
Beginning with a series of alphabets (uncial, half uncial, square capitals, cursive capitals and runic characters) this book leaps straight into a collection of projects for you to personalise, adding a Celtic feel to any occasion. The most adaptable include a Gaelic house-blessing, a Scottish travel blessing, an Ex Libris bookplate, a Celtic Knot bordered picture frame, and I do like the accordion-folded rainbow alphabet book.

On the whole, though, it felt as though this book was saying, 'If you use a celtic alphabet to decorate something, it becomes Celtic by association'. WHY use gaelic writing on a garden seed box? Why on earth decorate an ancient Chinese proverb with Celtic knotwork? I have no idea if wishing stones have Celtic connotations or history: painting Celtic letters onto stones certainly makes them look Celtic, but the book is a little thin on supporting background information.

This book is probably best for somebody who just appreciates Celtic illumination for its own sake, or has Celtic blood and wants to add a flavour of that to their home decor. I'm afraid I found it all a bit generic and uninspiring.
