Product Description

London, 1840: a young woman boards a prison ship bound for the other side of the world.

'An exciting, spirited and ambitious tale.' Andrew Miller, Costa-award winning author of Pure.

'The day was dove grey, and silk. A melancholic cloth that whispered and rustled. Who could say what it foretold.'

Dublin, 1840: Rhia Mahoney watches in despair as her father's linen warehouse goes up in flames. Her family is ruined. Her imagined future, full of pattern and colour, plum brocades and beetle-green taffeta, crumbles to ashes.

Seeking work as a governess in dismal London, Rhia's life is changed beyond all imagination when her uncle, a shipping merchant, commits suicide. Rhia cannot - will not - believe he would take his own life, but before she can investigate, she is accused of a crime she didn't commit, and forced to board a prison ship bound for New South Wales.

The voyage is one of dry biscuits and endless sea, made bearable by the women's daily chore: to sew scraps of cloth into an elaborate quilt. What Rhia does not realise is that with every stich, she binds herself closer to a journey of discovery that will not end in Australia...

Weaving death, love and adventure into a vivid tale of the world at the height of Empire, The Silver Thread is plotted like a murder mystery, but narrated with the skill and style of a literary storyteller.

5.0 out of 5 stars a rare and wonderful reading treat 3 July 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
The Silver Thread is that rare thing - a book where the gorgeous writing often stops you in your tracks and a plot which is a complete page-turner. Kylie Fitzpatrick takes us from Ireland to England to Australia in a story full of surprises with characters you just fall in love with. Two sections stand out for me - the long voyage to Australia is so vividly described I was practically seasick, and the heroine's first glimpse of the stark landscape there is as beautifully realised as anything Kate Grenville wrote in The Secret River.
I very much enjoyed The Ninth Stone, and looked forward to reading more - and I haven't been disappointed. I recommend it to everyone, and everyone's friends, not just fans of historical fiction. The Silver Thread is a terrific read.

3.0 out of 5 stars The Silver Thread 8 Jan 2013
By JM TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
Having read the reviews of this book I was sure I would love it: a Victorian murder mystery sounded just my kind of book but, unfortunately, in spite of all the other glowing reviews, it failed to grip me.
Rhia is a young Irish woman, headstrong and of her own mind. Following a fire which destroys her father's business and ruins her family, she travels to London to seek work under the guidance of her uncle, Ryan. But shortly after her arrival Ryan is found dead, an apparent suicide. Rhia refuses to believe that her uncle would kill himself and is determined to discover the truth. But she soon finds herself in trouble of her own when she is wrongly accused of stealing and sent to prison and then sentenced to seven years in an Australian colony.
Whilst I don't criticise the plot, I just didn't warm to any of the characters, they seemed bland and the writing did not sweep me along, it wasn't a bad book by any means but it didn't blow me away.

5.0 out of 5 stars A magical journey 6 Aug 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is a beautifully written book of a woman's journey to herself. With the help of the diary she writes to her deceased grandmother, Rhia finds the strength and the light to guide her from her misty Irish homeland, across the sea to England, and from there to Australia and back. From the glittering ballrooms of high society to the putrid hold of a prison ship, Rhia's story is one of murder, survival and love. Told with great insight and delicacy, underpinned by fastidious research, and woven around a series of apparently unconnected deaths, The Silver Thread is a compelling, magical tale that will keep you reading long into the night.
