Although this book is only slender, the memory of it has stayed with me for a long time. I read it when I was a child and picked it up again the other day because I couldn't get it out of my mind. I wasn't disappointed. It is a simply told, true story of Polish children struggling to survive the war and keep their family together. It is very moving, but not because it begs for pity, simply because it shows the courage and determination of ordinary people to live through terrible experiences and keep body and mind together.
