Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

A swan came to my loch one day, a silver swan. I was fishing for trout in the moonlight. She came flying in above me, her wings singing in the air. She circled the loch twice, and then landed, silver, silver in the moonlight.
A beautiful storybook, The Silver Swan is simply captivating. Author Michael Morpurgo's poetic, graceful prose soothingly echoes the movement of the silver swan who flies into the life of the narrator.

The boy wonders at the quiet beauty of the swan and his awe develops into a friendly companionship. The boy's love for her and her family is tangible and his protective instincts become brutally provoked by a family of foxes.

A wonderful, moving story capturing both the wonder and cruelty of nature with rich, dream-like illustrations by Christian Birmingham. --Rachel Ediss --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Book Description

An exquisite picture book, telling the romantic story of a family of swans and the boy who watches over them.

This book captivated me from the start. Christian Birmingham's illustrations have caught the very essence of Michael Morpurgo's story about the reality and harshness of nature. This is a wonderful book to share with a child or read as an adult. Parts of the story brought tears to my eyes, but the joy of this book was that it was life affirming. I believe that this will become a classic children's book and deserves to win The Kate Greenaway Medal this year for being an outstanding illustrated book for children and young people.

Happy and Sad 18 May 2003
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
I liked this book because it grabs your attention. From the first line it's really realistic like you're at the place and in the story. It's mainly happy but has a very sad ending. I cried.

Touching and healing 10 Dec 2007
By M. Su - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This book brought out many raw emotions for me as i read it to my children. It's about love, hate and the healing cycles of life and death. I believe it to be very appropriate for children and adults. Life brings forth challenges that may be painful but there is a time for healing too. What better way to illustrate that than through this touching story.

Horrible story, sure to give children (& adults?) nightmares 5 July 2007
By K. A. Fischer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Don't be fooled by the pretty illustration on the cover. This book is inappropriate for children of all ages. The book is about the violence that occurs among animals in nature, but it's told so graphically that it is both verbose and frightening. There is a line in the book from the little boy narrating who claims to have "murder and revenge in his heart." (I'm serious!) Tell me what parent wants to explain to a 5-year-old what "revenge" means. Do not read this book, it's creepy!
