Product Description

David Beveridge is in the wrong place at the wrong time.

When a gunman storms into a convenience store demanding money, he ends up shooting both the counterwoman and David. Only David doesn't die. Neither does the counterwoman. David is able to bring her back to life with the help of a mysterious silver ring he found earlier that night -- a ring that the darkest evil in the universe wants for its very own.

The Silver Ring is an 18,000-word novella that contains a special afterword and a bonus short story.

Praise for The Silver Ring:

"Robert Swartwood's The Silver Ring is a full-tilt no-holds-barred bobsled of a ride, absolutely engaging and a hundred percent fun. If this one doesn't grab you, it's time to up your Ritalin."

-- Joe Schreiber, author of Au Revoir, Crazy European Chick and Perry's Killer Playlist

"In short, sharp chapters, Robert Swartwood's The Silver Ring launches the reader into a high-flying, fast-paced cosmic adventure in which the fate of the universe rests in the hands of a seventeen-year-old movie clerk. Grounded in the emotional realities of an everyday family, Swartwood infuses his tall tale with the humanity of a young man navigating his way through the emotional minefields of everyday life while trying to be the best big-brother he can be. The Silver Ring delivers light in the heart of darkness, and simple truths from webs of mystery. Have fun!"

-- Gerard Houarner, author of The Oz Suite and A Blood of Killers

An armed robbery at a small convenience store results in David Beveridge being shot dead. The strange silver ring he has just found and irresistibly put onto his finger brings him back to life. So begins a fairly reasonable action adventure story. Initially I thought this was going to be a pure fantasy story, but it quickly branched off into a more science fiction based theme.

The presentation on the Kindle was fine, in fact it was rather good for a self published novel with no obvious mistakes that I could spot. One thing to point out though is that this story actually finishes at 60% on the Kindle status bar.

The remaining space is taken up initially with a short afterword from author talking about his writing of the story. This is then followed by a second very short pure science fiction story called Blind Insight that I actually enjoyed more than the main story. Waking up in a darkened room on board his exploration ship the captain can't remember what has happened or why the lights are not working.

This short story was sharp and intense and had a nice (if slightly obvious) twist at the end. This story will only take about 10 minutes to read and finishes at 66% on the status bar. The last 34% is taken up with two long samples of the other authors works. I read both the main story and the shorter second story back to back in about an hour and a half or so.

I am finding it quite hard to rate this book. The first story would probably have been better if it had stayed as an urban fantasy - that's not to say it was particularly bad, as it wasn't bad at all and it was rather nicely presented on the Kindle. I enjoyed the second story much more than the first, but it was a very short addition to the book. I think overall four stars is a fair rating on the balance of the two stories.

Enjoyable read 24 May 2011

I enjoyed the pace of this book and felt it was well written. It left me wanting more at the end. My only criticism was that the teenage boy sometimes came across as a battle hardened 40 year old.

I can suspend reality to enter into the realms of fantasy as well as the next person. Well I was suspended an awfully long time and didn't actually reach a fantasy which was halfway believable. OK, I admit I was intrigued and hoped that I would be shocked at the twist which would surely be revealed. What a con (sorry that's the only word which seems appropriate). Download at your own risk to your Kindle, DO NOT THROW IT when the reveal comes.

People live, people die, and still the world turns. It all seems so obvious, so standard, until someone close to you actually dies, and you notice the world hasnt stopped. Then the realization hits you that when you die, the world wont even hesitate, because it doesnt care at all. "e;
