This is an intelligent murder mystery set in ancient Rome and Britain. The actors work hard, using modern dialogue, to convey the story and create the atmosphere of this distant world. But it didn't quite work for me. Without the descriptive passages of the book it is hard to put the story into its proper context. The hero moves from Rome to Britain and back without any real sense of the nature, danger or length of the journeys involved. The plot moves briskly with some good twists and surprises. It is a little heavy-going at times; you have to concentrate to follow it and it is not completely convincing. But it is enjoyable nonetheless.
I first listened to this serial on the radio purely because it starred one of my favourite actors, Anton Lesser. Having missed an episode and not knowing when it would be repeated I investigated and found that the audio cds were available. I bought this one and was hooked! Now I have all of them and enjoy listening to them. Falco is a detective in Ancient Rome. While he investigates the various crimes, occasionally in peril himself, in the various series we get to know him and his family too. Highly recommended. I really hope there will be more.

Not overly impressed with this. Once upon a time you could totally trust the BBC but not any longer. They turn out poor products some of the time also. At times the music is so loud it's difficult to hear the voices. The story is OK but not great.
