5.0 out of 5 stars My new favorite book 6 Dec 2011
The Silver Devil is my new favorite book. I LOVED it! This historical romance was written in the first person from Felicia's POV, but the absence of Domenico's POV only adds to the tension and mystery in the book. It's definitely a bodice ripper, complete with a possessive (and downright psychotic) hero, a virgin heroine who is forced to be the hero's mistress, rape, and two people who are too proud to admit they love each other. I liked Felicia the whole way through the story. My heart broke for her each time she had to hide her love from Domenico when he seemingly flaunted his indifference around her. Only later do we discover his motives for some of his more outrageous actions (like showing her paintings of his prospective wives and asking her which one she liked best) were simply to make her jealous. He is semi-redeemed at the end of the book, but not completely. Felicia realizes that even though she loves him, he'll always be the harsh man who thinks nothing of ordering another man's death or torture. The conclusion is fantastic because the length Domenico goes to in order to secure Felicia as his wife is finally revealed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Beyond Cliches! A Classic! 24 July 2011
A classic of the genre! If you like this sort of thing...then this is the sort of thing you'll like. The heroine is innocent, downtrodden, beautiful, and narrates the story. The hero is an aristocrat, rich, powerful...and a psychotic @!*@. Really.
He is a strikingly handsome sociopath. Domineering, obssessive, possessive, highly sexed, irresistible to men and women, and he likes torturing people.
No bodice is left un-ripped.
There's blood, bi-sexuality,rennaisance Italian history, sadism, insanity, revenge, and a little transvestism thrown in. Is there anything in that description that makes you not want to read it? Course not!
It was madly enjoyable. Great way to pass an evening.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Devil you love 4 July 2009
The Silver Devil

I came across this book in a second hand book shop in the 80's and for a few pennies I was able to purchase a gem of a book. The likes of which I never read outside of classic plays of the sixteenth Century. Very much in the style of Webster. Yes the book can be describe as a dark romance but it is so well written that it has passed into a genre all of its own. Over the years I read and read read the book while desperately searching for other books by the author. I only found one more, The Flesh and the Devil.
I read a review of the Silver Devil that dismissed the heroine ( Felice) as a blank canvas on which the hero ( Domenico) created the perfect submissive doll. I beg to differ. Whilst you see the hero's character change throughout the book, Felice remains constant to her passion and is strong enough to withhold her feels so that she keeps him guessing right to the end of the novel. Feminist can dismiss this book but I see it as a triumphant of a writer who didn't pretend to write the classic acceptance of a hero. The author delved deep into a woman heart and was true to her idea of a hero. It so happens that Domenico also appeals to a great majority of woman who want to be loved with such passion. It is fantasy, but hey, that is what the novel is and for a short period of time the reader can become lost in a Renaissance world that is near accurately described, as anything can be,
All other Historical romantic novelist, with the exception of Christine Monson (novel Rangoon and not others by her) take note the standard has been set. Unfortunately Ms Deny was killed shortly after publishing the Flesh and the Devil and so there are no more books by this fabulous author. But she has left a memorable legacy behind.
