This book was read to the class by my year six teacher and nearly ten years on I still regard it as one of my favourite books. It is filled with suspense and threat of danger, making it one of the most effective children's thrillers. I searched madly for a copy a couple of years ago and am really glad it's back in print because it truly deserves another generation of readers. I'd recommend it for readers around 10-12 years old.

I first read this outstanding book when I was about eight or nine years old, and it made a huge impression on me. It was such a completely new reading experience for me, and it has lost none of its freshness with repeated readings. It is a 'traditional' tale of good versus evil, but it is darker and more exciting than any so-called 'children's' books I've ever read. Absoutely wonderful... it will capture you from the first pages, when Ellen receives a beautiful silver crown for her birthday and decides to go out for a morning walk. Read it, everybody should.

I first read this at the age of 10 and couldn't put it down! I've been trying to find a copy for the past 6 years and low-and-behold, it's here!

Wonderful narrative, vivid, face-moving and entertaining. A must read for all children who like fantasy, but also parents can enjoy it as well! Heart-warming story of Ellen and Otto and the two crowns, and well worth reading.
