Product Description

Six children leave the comfort of their homes. They are drawn to Coldharbour - an eerie wasteland of wind, rats, seagulls and rubbish tips. Emily and Freda, the twins, scuttle bright eyed and insect-like in search of the others. They find Thomas on a food tip. The gentle giant boy, Walter, joins them and so does Helen, who can read minds. And at the centre of it all is luminous Milo, his skin hot and bright with silver.

Each of them has a unique gift, but they must learn to use their skills fast. Drawing ever closer in a maelstrom of fury is the Roar, something vast and dreadful that wants to destroy them all.

As in The Doomspell trilogy, Cliff's characters really are "the children next door" until they discover the powers they possess and he sweeps them and the reader into his worlds of magical fantasy, writing exciting, breathtaking adventures with richly imagined, vividly drawn characters, and an infectious energy, warmth and humour.

The Silver Child is Book 1 in a heart-stopping new sequence.

Or Secret Seven meet X-men? This new book by Cliff McNish is much more than that! Six mutant children and one adult are drawn to a rat-infested, rubbish-strewn, windswept, rain-lashed, wasteland. Something is coming. Something terrible. Something which roars in the silence of outer space. And these freaks might be the only ones who can save the earth. The Silver Child is the first in a new series by the author of the Doomspell trilogy. It's dark, eerie, unsettling and creepy... you'll love it!

What a fantastic book! When I finished reading The Doomspell trilogy, (also written by Cliff McNish), I didn't know where to look. Finally, he produced another spectacular book which was equally as hard to put down. The great thing is, I'm 15, and I've never really been in to reading, but when Cliff McNish began to write, he changed my mind. I am now an aved reader of his books. I know that many adults enjoy reading his books as well. So if you have children who aren't really in to reading but you think they should be - Buy the Doomspell Trilogy! Then move on to the Silver Child - (This is also in a series of books). I do suggest that you read the books in the order they were written however, because otherwise they could get fairly confusing. Any way, back to The Silver Child! This book is a fantastic fantasy and adventure story, which is described so realistically, you can almost believe it really happened - which makes the reading so much more interesting! The characters roles are described so thoroughly, you really do get to think you know them! If there was a '100 star rating' for this book, it would be given by all readers! A MUST read for anyone, no matter whether you like reading or not! - Once again - BRILLIANT!!!

I thought this book was pretty remarkable. I'm an adult, and expected more of the Doomspell wizard/witch/magic stuff, so what a surprise. Mo magic, but the gifts these kids have got is just as weird and wonderful as magic. This is an amazing book, a completely original plot with some of the most intriguing characters I've ever come across. I can't believe how much I fell in love with those strange insect-like twins. The darker side of it - the way there's conflict between the kids, means you read it on edge some of the time, but by the end you realise that the conflict felt true, real. It's all so amazingly crazy and yet you beleive every word! Roll on book 2!
