A reissue of 2 Topic albums from the 70s, this has to be not only the definitive album of Shetland fiddling but one of the best introductions you could get to Scottish fiddle generally. Aly Bain has of course been Mr Shetland Fiddle for three decades; and here he is, with his mentor Tom Anderson and contemporaries, playing many of the best-known tunes of the tradition. Probably no part of these islands has explored the possibilities of the instrument so thoroughly, and some of these tunes will be an eye-opener to those not familiar with them. Arrangements are simple, with many pieces unaccompanied.

An excellent introduction to old Shetland Fiddling, with a selection of traditional tunes and some written by the late Tom Anderson. Pupil and Master play together, in other words Tom Anderson and his pupil, the current go to guy for all things Shetlandish and Fiddlish, Aly Bain. Many of the tunes resurface in Aly bain's later recordings, so (for a bit of folk anorak like myself) it is really nice to hear different versions played by the same person.
This is a great recording for tune fans, and should be an inspiration for up and coming fiddlers. I bought it as download, so do not have the info as to who plays on what tracks..can this be remedied ?

I bought this album after returning from the Shetland Fiddle Frenzy. It is 'the bible' for Shetland fiddlers. The tunes are all widely known and played in Shetland.

This is a wonderful compilation of Shetland Island tunes done by two great fiddlers. I highly recommend this CD. It is well worth the purchase.
