RAVE REVIEWS
As long as she can remember, the exquisite Lenore Cleremont has lived at The Silk House, the luxurious English country estate of the wealthy Sallonger family. Neither a slave nor a servant, she has grown into a young woman who has shown promise as a dress designer. But she has also won the heart of the two charismatic Sallonger sons. Then tragedy strikes. And Lenore finds herself playing a central role in a drama that threatens to destroy everything she holds dear.... --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Lenore Cleremont lives in The Silk House, as house guest with her Grandmere - one of the best silk dressmakers in the business. Wondering why she's not addressed as 'Miss' like the daughters of the house, nor yet a servant, Lenore goes through childhood with a mystery attached to her birth and legitimacy, only knowing that her mother died and her grandmother was taken from the village of Villers-Mure in France, home of the illustrous silk weavers the St Allengeres, by rival family head Mr Sallonger, the English branch of that name.
Whether a 'Miss' or no, Lenore has something about her that attracts people, as well as a keen brain, curiosity and talent at learning about business and the silk industry. Her life is tied to that of the Sallongers - the two brothers, elder evil Charles with his obsession of treating Lenore like a scullery maid to be felt up on the back stairs by the master, and lovely Philip, who has the family's passion for the silk business and his own quiet love for Lenore herself. Then there's Julia, the spoilt and calculating elder sister, and quiet unassuming Cassie, who looks up to Lenore. Together, they will deal with a long-running family rivalry, the perils and trials of business and industry in Victorian times, love and loss and the discovery of birth and ancestry, secrets kept hidden for too long.
This saga story follows Lenore and those connected to her in life and love from her childhood at The Silk House in England to Florence, London, Paris and the French countryside before the mystery dogging her days is solved and she can find her happy-ever-after. A good read.

Victoria Holt is amazing! 16 April 2001
By Maria J. Arellano - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Library Binding
Lenore lives and grows up in the house of the Sallongers along with her grandmother whom is very skilled at dressmaking. The Sallongers have had a long time feud with an extended part of their family, the St. Allengeres, about which of the families is the best in the silk making business. When Lenore marries one of the Sallonger sons a mysterious chain of events unfolds involving seduction, greed, murder and revenge. I have only started reading Victoria Holt's books and I am hooked. She is an excellent mystery-romance writer and am determined to read all of her books. I highly recommend her books, especially for those romantics out there.

This is one of Victoria Holt's best. It has a surprise ending, as usual; best of all, it is not full of gruesome images. I am rereading the last half.
Excellent read 23 May 2004

Format:Hardcover
The Silk Vendetta is one of Victoria Holt's best books. Mixing intrigue, mystery, romance and suspense, she weaves a compelling tale round the heroine Lenore, who grows up at The Silk House. The background of the silk trade is engrossing, and Lenore's character is compelling as she deals with the two men in her life, Philip - likeable and kindhearted- and Charles, as cruel as he is handsome. But as always with Victoria Holt, all is not as it seems, and Lenore has to go through a succession of adventures before finding true love. If you like your romances sevred up with plenty of adventure, then read this book. If you've read other Victoria Holt books then you'll know what I mean, and if you haven't, you're in for a treat.
