Product Description

Manufacturer's Description
The Silent Hill Collection comprises Silent Hill 2, Silent Hill 3, and Silent Hill 4: The Room, offering a massive overview of the games that redefined the horror genre. Each game is linked to the mysterious town of Silent Hill, a mist-covered and deserted place where misshapen creatures lurk in the shadows and abandoned buildings. It was first visited in the PSOne title of the same name in 1999, before the three sequels made the leap to PlayStation 2 and added larger play areas and more grotesque imagery to the game.

Each Silent Hill title follows a central character inextricably linked to the town. In Silent Hill 2, James Sunderland's life is shattered when his young wife Mary suffers a tragic death. Three years later, a mysterious letter arrives from Mary, beckoning him to return to their sanctuary of memories, the dark realm of Silent Hill. Silent Hill 3, however, begins with a young girl called Heather innocently shopping in a sprawling mall, only to find herself transported to Silent Hill for reasons to tied to her childhood. Silent Hill 4: The Room is a more claustrophobic entry to the series. A young man called Henry Townshend finds himself trapped in his apartment and unable to contact anyone outside. A large portal has also appeared in his bathroom and inevitably leads him to Silent Hill and a terrifying plot that could see the town's inhuman denizens invading our dimension.

The games all use a potent mix of puzzle-solving, exploration and combat elements, while beautifully-realised cut scenes reveal new twists in the plot as the mystery of Silent Hill is developed. The three games also boast unique elements, too, with Silent Hill 3 featuring the gradual transformation of the shopping mall into the rotting locations of the town, while Henry's flat in Silent Hill 4: The Room is also affected by the grime and visible decay as the town's evil seeps through the portal.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great! Even if IT IS an obvious cash-in!, 21 April 2006
By Stephen Turner (Cardiff, Wales UK) - See all my reviews

Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This collection has been released on the same day as the Silent Hill movie opens in cinema. So yes, it's a cash-in. But it's also a great re-release for the scariest pyschological horror games ever released. If you're looking at this, chances are you know what Silent Hill is. If not, then think early Resident Evil but with stronger emphasis on character and gothic storylines.

Silent Hill 2 is the best of the bunch here. It's one of the few games that has a sad story that perfectly interweaves interaction within a narrative structure. It's also scary enough without relying on explosive setpieces. You're basically creeped out from minute one and the story of multiple identity and lost love will have you playing right through to the end in long sessions. Be warned, there's moments where basically nothing happens and can put some player's off.

Silent Hill 3 is more action paced. Probably the hardest of the bunch too. This is my least fave and it also suffers from the lack of the first Silent Hill in this collection. The storyline doesn't hold up so well, as it tries to wrap up the original's premise. Unfortunatley, the increase in action loses a lot in the way of intensity. The characterisation is not that great either. Heather is a character you'll love or hate. The reworked inventory and psuedo-platform action is out of place in this series. If you play SH2 first, you'll probably find this a bit of a slug.

Silent Hill 4: The Room is a huge (to some) departure after the criticism of SH3's control system and the series overall triedness. This one has divided fans, with it's new live action inventory system and the repetitive second half. I loved this one as it went back to the emphasis on character and story. Also it's split between the claustrophbic 1st person apartment and the standard 3rd person perspective in the Otherworld. While it becomes a bit of a slugfest in places, not to mention frustrating at times, it's nice to see that they streamlined and changed many aspects without comprimising the series atmosphere.

So why 3 stars? The problem with this collection is there's no Silent Hill (off the PSone). The scariest of the lot in my opinion. In fact if you're new to Silent Hill, it pretty much explains a lot (in vague kind of way...hey, it's a trademark!), plus without it SH3 becomes a bit alienating when it starts to reveal it's background. It such a waste because, probably since all PSone games are in deletion, without the origins this doesn't feel complete. If you're new to Silent Hill, welcome...make sure you hunt down the excellent first installment. BUT! I'm guessing most people own these games already and it's definatley a rushed cash-in. So only for hardcore collectors (you'ed have to be really hardcore!) or for newbies.

4.0 out of 5 stars Silent Hill, the Compilation?, 18 Jul 2006
By Karen White "Tippandora" (England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Ah, Silent Hill. What a town one would certainly not like to be in. The games, however, are something you'd certainly like to play if you have a taste for horror and emotional tales. Although the third and fourth Silent Hill display a fright of thinning in the series, the second one is the one you should be aiming to play above all else. Now, I'm not saying that the second one is better than the first (which they brutally didn't include!), but it bloody well comes close. The third one has good voice acting work and a nice story which continues on from the first, but the fourth one isn't exactly the best. Apparantly, Silent Hill 4 was going to be an entirely different game at the start of development, but Konami didn't want to risk another horror brand name with the Silent Hill series, that is probably why it differs so much from the previous games. That and it doesn't really have much soul to it, if you know what I mean.
I don't want to offend anyone giving this only four stars, and I sincerely wouldn't want to put any buyers off, as they are great games. And they save space, of course..
It just recieves four stars from me because it seems like a money making scheme, perhaps, and they didn't include Silent Hill One, which I mentioned before.
So, if you really do like horror games or want a good tear jerker (Silent Hill 2.), then why not?
The music, atmosphere and graphics don't let down, I feel!

5.0 out of 5 stars You'd be hard pressed to find a film this scary., 26 Aug 2006
By Stoph (United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
I had heard from friends that this series was a scary one, but i was entirely unprepared for the reality of it. What makes it so frightening is not what you DO see, but what you DONT. Auditory, rather than visual horror is used fantastically. Mechanical clanking, footsteps in the distance which grow steadily louder, and that never-ending crackle of white noise - all add up to a spine-chilling experience.
Furthermore, the power of this series is boosted by its incredible storylines. Characters are believable, and plots are wholesome. However, the spookiness is maintained by the fact that you're never offered a complete explanation for why Silent Hill is like it is. The series leaves a lot to the imagination and I love this in a game/film.
My only complaint is that the series appears to go somewhat downhill as it progresses - 'Silent Hill 2'is utterly flawless; 'Silent Hill 3'is good but not as good; and 'Silent Hill 4: The Room'is somewhat of a dissapointment after experiencing the other two. So, my advice would be to play them from last to first, and thus you wont be blinded by the incredible quality of Silent Hill 2.
