This, the third instalment of the Chronicles of Amber, is an absolute classic. If you're just looking for lots of fighting you might be disappointed, but when it comes to plot scheming, back stabbing, Machiavellian intrigue this can't be beaten!
From the very beginning we are confronted with new mysteries, even while tying up some old ones. The story finally centres on the true city, and it is here that we get to see the Amberites the way they truly are. To say the least it is an eye opener!
This book is one of the very best of the Amber series. We start to get an inkling that all the things we've been seeing up until now are only the peripheral effects of some deep, sinister, world destroying problem. The characters acquire yet more depth, and every page is simply a joy to read as you immerse yourself in the atmosphere.
It deserves every one of those five stars.
