Product Description

Conventional wisdom holds that some children are "born shy," destined for a lifetime of timidity and underachievement, or that they will magically outgrow their shyness as they mature. Bernardo Carducci, Ph.D. debunks these myths. He reveals that they are stuck in an approach/avoidance conflict that makes it difficult for them to warm up to new situations and often leaves them clinging to narrow comfort zones. He identifies the skills that allow children to take control of their anxieties and explains how parents can nurture these skills.

Anyone with concerns for their shy child should definitely buy this book. It has been a God send for my family and my seven year old "shy" child. And it does exactly what it says on the tin!

Despite being an Infant teacher for ten years it did nothing to prepare me for being a parent raising a shy, slow-to-warm-up child. She found changing classes every year at school extremely difficult and has been frozen in fear when confronted with new activities, places and people.

My husband had shy tendencies as a child but I didn't and I found it very frustrating not understanding the causes of her shyness and how best to approach it to help her.

This book is very readable, easy to use and full of great advice that will get you thinking and understanding your child's particular triggers. It clearly explains why children find experiences such as a new school, sports class and meeting new people difficult. It helps you form strategies to use to help them become successfully shy. I started reading this book six weeks ago and have seen profound changes in my daughter's behaviour. My husband and I can now see how our family environment wasn't teaching her to deal with the emotions positively by herself. It has even helped us prevent our un-shy second child developing shy behaviours because we were repeating the wrong behaviours with him.

As I now understand her triggers and the reasons for them I can confidently coach her on how to deal with them, without any frustration. My only regret is that I didn't discover this book years ago!

I would have paid 100x the price for this book for the insight and the incredible transformations so far in my child's behaviour and approach to her triggers.

A Must Have Book for Parents of Shy Children 3 Nov 2004
By Amy S. Borman - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I can't thank Dr. Carducci enough for writing this book. Dr. Carducci addresses the issue of childhood shyness with not only an excellent explanation of what shyness is but he also provides practical tips on how parents can help their shy child become "successfully shy". Dr. Carducci uses short stories to illustrate the obstacles a shy child encounters and integrates his tips to show how to better address the situation. My 4 year old daughter is a typical "slow to warm up" child and by implementing Dr. Carducci's suggestions my daughter now more easily adjusts to new situations, new people and new activities. This is a must read for parents of a shy child.

Excellent book for parents of a shy child 20 Nov 2003
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This new book is the best and most up to date guide for parents of a shy child. The author effectively communicates his message -- that parents can help a shy child learn to live "successfully" with his or her natural temperament. Highly recommended.

Dr. Carducci is one of those outstanding doctors that have combined experience with shyness with extensive research on shyness to yield powerful, successful insights and exercizes to help his patients and readers. His books are consistently focused on providing sensible, doable activities to help the shy person gradually become outgoing. His other books including a book for shy teens are unbeatable. His works are well written and fun to read. Thank you, Dr. Carducci.
