Despite the "World Records" theme, this book manages to keep the general format of Radio 4's The Now Show, with Hugh Dennis, Steve Punt, Jon Holmes, Marcus Brigstocke and to a lesser extent Mitch Benn all contributing short, satirical, and mostly hilarious monologues about the state of the world around the middle of 2009.
Knowing it can never be as up-to-date and topical as the radio show, there are some more broad diatribes about the modern world, which unfortunately at times can make you feel like you've accidentally bought the Grumpy Old Men tie-in book instead. Despite this, the book might still date quite rapidly, as like so many things in politics the subject matter that seems such a hot topic at the time might be totally forgotten about by this time next year.
The only problem is that some of this stand-up-style writing doesn't quite work as well in print as it does on the radio. Unlike the book tie-ins from other radio and TV shows, not that much thought seems to have gone into actually making this a book, where instead it reads like a bunch of draft scripts to be used or rejected from the radio show, recycled into a book. However recycling is of course A Good Thing and therefore it must be praised.
