5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Information 7 July 2004
Format:Hardcover
John Taylor has done a fine job helping us unlock the often arcane terminology and mysteries of shotguns and the personalities in the long history of shotgun use and development. Now I understand the difference, for example, between "boxlock" and "sidelock." An excellent reference and NOT boring reading, either. Good job, John Taylor.

3.0 out of 5 stars Reads Like a Dictionary 14 Dec 2008
By M. Davis - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
No doubt, one can learn a lot about shotgun part names, terms, types of shooting and even some of the more prominent people related to shotguns, but it truly is a reference book. It provides an alebetical list of topics with a short description for each of them. If you want a reference for that odd-ball question which may occassionally arise, you may find this book very useful, but the coverage is fairly superficial. Thus, you should not expect a lot of new insights, pro/con discussions or in-depth perspective.
3.0 out of 5 stars Truly a reference source 10 Feb 2013

If you have a question about a part on a shotgun, what it is called, what it does, it is more than likely covered in this book. Not something that you sit down and read but something you pull off the shelf when you need an answer.
4.0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected, but I like it. 30 April 2012

When I ordered this book, I was expecting something with detailed pictures and something more that I could get a good visual of. This is literally an encyclopedia! At first I was kind of disappointed, but it rapidly grew on me when I sat down with it and began to read it and saw that it wasn't some guy rambling on about his love on guns. It is a complete encylopedia on shotguns, it has everything you could possibly need to know about your shotgun. GREAT for beginners.
