I came across "The Short Hello", by an extraordinary quirk of fate, misfiled (presumably!), as it was, in the Gardening section of the local [bookshop], when I was actually looking for a tome on how to pollard the trees in my garden (rock'n'roll lifestyle that I lead). No, seriously! It was actually half in the Gardening Section and half in the Martial Arts section. I guess you should make of that what you will... Anyway, I considered this to be most portentious, so I bought it. "The Short Hello", that is. (Together with a book on pollarding trees, of course.) And I'm very glad I did! This is a evocative collection of short stories that takes a fresh and often darkly humourous perspective on the underbelly of everyday situations and discourse. "Bluebeard" is one of the most original bits of writing I've read in ages. I thought it was absolutely wonderful. In fact, I'm green with envy at Ms Maguire's ability to come up with such ideas! But thus far (I'm halfway through "Long Shot" at the moment) I liked "A Night In" (for its candid reality) and "Bathtime" the best, the latter being very melancholic and brooding, both of which struck chords of recognition with me. Anyway, suffice to say I've enjoyed them all, and so, if only by way of saying thanks to Ms Maguire for writing a book that has provided me of a couple of most enjoyable lunchtimes' reading, I just felt the need to cast my humble opinions, and much as I'm no literary critic, I do read [] loads, and I'm sure that must count for something ...
So, recommended unreservedly!
And, of course, one further bit of advice to offer ... if you are unable to find this marvellous book in the cavernous fiction section of your local bookshop, you now know where to look. Although, in truth, rather than "Gardening" and "Martial Arts", it would be more appropriately filed under "Grouting" and "Marital Aids" ...
