The Shoreditch Tales 14 May 2010
Format:Paperback
The Shoreditch Tales is a fascinating look into life around Hoxton and the surrounding areas in the early 20th century and a little later. It makes you realise just how poor those people were. The authors have made the book interesting as well as giving their own personal views. Some of the quotes are quite humorous and down to earth. A very readable book which if you have any connections with the area either through previous family, work or just being a Londoner, you will love it. My wife doesn't normally read books but this one she didn't put down. After the book we have been back to Hoxton to see how much its changed. Amazingly it hasn't. The people have !

Family History 19 April 2011
Format:Paperback
I was given this book as a gift as my family all come from the Hoxton, or Angel, area of London. It is a great read, written in an easy and informative style. It covers the Shoreditch area from the late 1900's until about 2007. Festivals, shops and people are all discussed and reminisced over. First person stories are related in detail. One criticism I have, is that I would have liked some kind of an Index, for family names mentioned, and for streets etc. That would have made it an even easier book to dip in and out of, especially as it is really an Historical record of the area. As an aside, I would like to point out that the cover of the book actually shows my grandfather and his cafe, and this was the first time I had actually seen a picture of him!! Overall, a very interesting and informative read.

SHOREDITCH TALES 4 Dec 2009
Format:Paperback
WHile it is a pleasing book it does not cover the haggerston side of shoreditch very much if at all it is nice to read about pitfield street but the book lakes much of the early history of the area even if it does mention william shakspears connection to the area but being born in the haggerstone area in 1936 I guess I need to write my own shoreditch tales I have the publsher and no the place very well all my wells family lived in the the haggerston area including the worton family , and the bregenzer family my gt. grandmother who moved from crab tree row lived in whiston street as it was called then until she died in 1933while most of the other members of the family were born in talavera place or ash grove theydid loose 2 members of the family when they lived in bethnal green and another 2 in shoreditch but all the same it is a good read I should also mention my wise and hurt family who also lived in the area with us
