Such gentle sleuthing 17 May 2010
By Jane Baker VINE™ VOICE
Format:Hardcover
A delight. It's always a treat to be re-united with Jude and Carole and their very own style of amateur detection mixed with copious glasses of Chardonnay. Opposites attract and whilst there's often a frisson of tension between these two - largely on Carole's part - they work so well together and in this story Carole even shows signs of becoming something of a gossip, venturing onto Fethering beach without Gulliver, so keen is she to find clues. As usual Jude has her little secret venture and Carole is caught twitching the curtain to find out about the mystery man but there's no malice. The Le Bonnier family and their associated hangers on are a weird mix of misfits so the murderer could be anyone. Ted only has a minor part this time which is a shame as he adds a bit of jollity and scandal generally. What a delightful series this is.

As good as ever 22 Mar 2010
By Wendy Jones TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Hardcover
I am a great fan of Simon Brett and have read most of his other books. I like the Fethering series and I have to agree with the other reviewer that they just keep getting better. The basic storyline is that a very arty shop is burnt down and not surprisingly a body is found inside. Carol and Jude go about investigating the murder and as always get their man or woman as the case may be. The characters are growing throughout the series and we get to know much more about them in this book. It always amazes me that Carol, for someone who is so shy and self reliant, manages to ask the most personal and probing of questions, to get to the root of the mystery. However, this is part of her character and it works. She is becoming more likable and at one point in the book I even felt sorry for her. The supporting cast of characters are quite excentric in this book, but it all seems to come together. This is a traditional murder mystery with no blood or gore, but is still a good read and a book you will not want to put down. I would highly recommend this book, as I would all the Fethering mysteries.

I've read all of the books in the Fethering series of mysteries and this is probably one of the best. It's Christmas and Carole is not looking forward to it as the arrangements are not cut and dried how she prefers them to be. Jude - her next door neighbour and fellow sleuth - persuades Carole to visit a shop called Gallimaufry to get some unusual presents for her son and daughter-in-law. A few days later the shop burns down and the body of the owner's step-daughter is discovered. But this is no tragic accident and Carole and Jude are intrigued.

The plot is fast paced with some memorable characters - Ricky Le Bonnier and his aging mother, Flora, and wife Lola. Kath - Ricky's eccentric first wife appears on the scene - claiming she knows what he is doing without even seeing him. Old Garge - who appears to live in a beach hut surrounded by books and Radio 3. The dog walkers of Fethering - of whom Carole is one - play a big part in the story and serve to show that nothing is hidden from anyone in a small town or village.

The book is well written with many humorous moments and the plot is believable. Gradually Carole is becoming less formal and even visits her next door neighbour without phoning first. Jude is becoming a little less restless and seems not to be on the point of moving elsewhere as had seemed a possibility in the last book. The friendship between the two unlikely neighbours is deepening and Carole's relationship with her son and daughter-in-law is becoming more relaxed partly because of baby Lily.

This is a traditional mystery with very little violence or bad language and is all the better for these omissions in my opinion. The characters are believable as is the dialogue and Ricky's network of friends, lovers, ex-wives and children are well drawn. I enjoyed the book and would recommend it to anyone who has not yet tried this series.

Excellent cosy crime

Ok but........
I enjoy virtually all of Simon Brett's writing - books and radio plays - and I have read all of the Fethering series.
