The editor of this anthology writes of the pleasure to be had after a day's shooting when you read of others' exploits, and I whole-heartedly agree! Tired, and happy, after a few hours on our rough shoot, shotgun cleaned, drink in hand, this book is just wonderful. It brings the magic of this beautiful sport to life, and enhances the feeling of a day well-spent.
But even on those days when I haven't been shooting, and a long empty period stretches ahead until the start of the new season, this book keeps the magic alive. It's wonderful to read of how others appreciate nature and shooting, and, as the excerpts go back two hundred years, is also very interesting from a historical point of view.
It would also make a great gift to someone just starting in the shooting life, or considering it. There are many tales of early experiences - first gun, first shot - which would be exciting for a favourite nephew, perhaps - or niece.
I doubt it would turn around the committed anti/professional vegetarian, but it might be illuminating for someone with an open mind who hasn't yet tried the sport.
All in all a great buy, which has given me much pleasure.
