Book Description

3 Dec 2007

English society beauty Genevieve Shelby King parties to the utmost with the Anglo-American artists and writers of Montparnasse. She has a rich husband, a glamorous apartment and an enormous shoe collection. But there is something hollow at the centre of Genevieve's charmed life.

When she spots a pair of unique and exquisite shoes on the feet of an arch rival one night, her whole collection -- indeed everything she has -- seems suddenly worthless. The exclusive designer Paolo Zachari, renowned for his fabulous shoes and eccentric behaviour, hand-picks his clients according to whim. And he has determined to say no to Genevieve.

As her desire for the pair of unobtainable shoes develops into an obsession with their creator, Genevieve's elaborately designed life comes under threat, and she is forced to confront the emptiness at its heart.

Review

What a book. Prepare to be plunged into the obscenely-rich, scandal-spiked, intrigue-laced world of 1920s Paris...Luxurious and edged with peril, like slipping on a pair of unwalkably-high Manolos. (Cosmopolitan )

If you yearn for latter-day soirees and have a shoe fetish to rival Carrie Bradshaw's, you'll love this book about an English society beauty (Heat )

An enthralling tale of a heel-obsessed socialite, whose desire to own a pair of exclusive Paolo Zachari shoes is so great, it leads to an affair with the designer himself (In Style )

An entertaining tale of desire, desperation and designer pumps (Metro )

So sharply individual, a brilliant, clever idea (Rachel Billington )

5.0 out of 5 stars A heady glimpse of 1920's Paris 23 Aug 2007
Format:Hardcover
It's Paris in the 1920's and society wife Genevieve is living the bohemian highlife with non stop parties and debauchery in bohemian Montparnasse. However when she is introduced to the infamous shoe designer Paolo Zachari her life begins to spiral out of control.

I don't really want to tag this book as chicklit as this genre seems to have a bad press of late but it is - with a 1920's edge! What a great book; it's easy to read, has an entertaining plot and is bursting with intoxicating descriptions of 1920's Paris. If you want to sit and sink into a different era for a few hours then buy this book, you won't be disappointed. Oh and this version even comes in a fab handbag size to make it even more perfect!

3.0 out of 5 stars 1920s Paris . . . . . 8 Feb 2008
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book has more of a serious edge to it that most of the 'chick-lit' it is grouped with. Although an unchallenging read it is clear that the writer is passionate about shoes and the era. It really does give you an insight into the Bohemian lifestyle of 1920s Paris where tuberculosis and drinks at the Ritz go hand in hand. This book may also make you look at your feet in a whole new light!

4.0 out of 5 stars Guaranteed to put a smile on your face, 25 Feb 2010
Format:Paperback
As other reveiwers have noted this isn't your usual chicklit. It has so much more going for it and I found it so interesting reading about 1920's Paris. The forbidden romance of Geneveive and Zachari really does keep you gripped, and you honestly want it to all work out for them. With lovable characters and a sparkling setting, a hidden past and sexual encounters this really does tick all the boxes.
