More vampire shenanigans from the master of gothic atmosphere Jean Rollin. If there is one thing that Rollin does better than anyone else in his films its producing some fabulous eerie and dreamlike atmosphere. This film is of course no exception. In fact I think it is more about atmosphere than plot. A young honeymooning couple stop for the night at a castle. Unbeknownst to them, the castle is home to a horde of vampires. This leads to ample amounts of nudity and soft-core lesbian vampire action. Although very Low-budget and thin on plot, I did thoroughly enjoy this film. But I must say that I found the two lead make Vampire's over camp. Also the cheesy psychedelic rock score seems really out of place. But any gripes can be forgiven because Rollin muse Marie-Pierre Castel gets a small role as a Maid. And thankfully she gets a generous amount of mostly naked screen time.

Gothick creeps? 3 Dec 2009
By Hywel James TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:DVD
Had this movie been made by a team of GCSE Media Studies young people it would have merited perhaps two stars for a good try. But it was actually made by what I understand is a "cult" director from France and as such it gets a thin and rather pallid one star for a dismal effort. The cast move, very slowly and without ever smiling, around a ruined chateau, wearing the kind of clothes that camp antiques dealers used to affect in the 1970's: velour bell-bottoms, lots of beads and gauzy blouses. The women wear very little and what they do manage to clasp to their ample bosoms gets regularly tugged away by the importunate (and unfortunate) undead.

The cinematography creaks, the dialogue is either non-existent (the female vampires) or ludicrously pretentious cod-philosophy (the main men), and the music is provided by the same Media Studies rock group who might (given the chance) have made a better job of the film first time around.

No, this movie is bloodless and hopeless!

abysmal transfer 10 Feb 2011
By MDB - Published on Amazon.com
Format:DVD
The Salvation Films transfer is terrible: a cheap interlaced transfer (probably from a PAL source), which looks terrible on my HD system (and on my low-res system too!). Rollin's films are much too important to be given this kind of treatment. The days of interlaced transfers should be a thing of the past. I am not the only one to think this way about the transfer, see the comparison with the Encore transfer and the older Image transfer at DVD Beaver:

[...]

Also, throughout the film, there are several moments where full red frames (2 or 3 frames) are spliced into the transfer. Why? There is absolutely no reason for this! I have seen this film numerous times, and I quite sure that these red frames are not in the original cut. I even saw some on the Rollin short "Les amours jaunes," which was shot entirely in black and white!! This is completely outrageous and could be easily fixed if care and attention were taken with the transfers.

Unbelievably, the synch goes off in the French version about 30 minutes into the film, and is never fully restored! The synch does not go off by a few seconds, but by a good 30 seconds or more!!

I e-mailed Salvation Films about their abysmal transfer and never got a reply.

Vampire Family-Rollin Style 3 July 2010
By William Amazzini - Published on Amazon.com
Format:DVD
I have not yet seen this release but I own the Image entertainment DVD and if Redemption is behind it, this release will definitely be a better upgrade. Jean Rollin's third vampire opus is a rollicking good time mixing eroticism, surreal horror, and eccentric humor throughout its running time. A couple on their honeymoon decide to go the brides castle homestead and finds her siblings have become vampires. They naturally want her to join them. The female vampire responsible for the mayhem frequently emerges from a grandfathers clock in a bone chilling image not easily forgotten. The film emerges as one of Rollins most enjoyable films and a great prerequisite to his vampire masterpieces still to come. Highly recommended to vampire fans who think that the 'TWILIGHT' saga is the new wave of vampire horror. Be prepared to be blown away by a film maker from the sixties who never ceases to amaze me no matter how many times his films are viewed. Rollin is an absolute genius.
Fine Movie...Horrible DVD 6 Jan 2011
By M. Heggemann - Published on Amazon.com
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
I enjoyed the movie fine, this new DVD is a travesty, though.

The image is, at least anamorphic widescreen, but the interlacing is absolutely abysmal! I started getting a headache after the first 10 minutes. All movement on screen is smeared, and everyone moving in a scene looks like they are leaving trails behind them.

The really weird thing is, at several points in the movie and in the short subject included as an extra, a single, solid frame of red will appear that is disorienting and quite noticeable. Searching the web brings up several links claiming this is an issue with some mastering software when going from PAL to NTSC. In other words, there seem to be some issues with the encoding on this DVD.

Anyway, buyer beware!
