Using the good ship WYAL (for While You Ain't Looking) for various motley "transport" jobs, she has quickly gained a reputation as a trustworthy courier with a flexible approach to the rules. Which is why Centrals Worlds Security haas recruited Joat and the WYAL to determine the present whereabouts of the Kolnari space raiders, with whom Joat has an old score to settle.
But Belazair of the Kolnari has his own plans for revenge through an incurable and highly infectious disease that quickly destroys the higher brain functions, leaving the body a mindless husk. Belazair needs to find a carrier ship to spread the infection - and the carrier he has hired is Joat, who is completely unaware that she is receiving a deadly cargo which could destroy civilization throughout the galaxy!

Format:Mass Market Paperback
I bought this to find out what happened to the characters I loved from 'The City Who Fought', which I greatly enjoyed, and I must admit to being a little disappointed. The novel *did* tell you what had happened, but it seemed somewhat contrived in places, with none of the sublty of the first book, and a few parts which seemed rushed. Some of the situations seemed to be there only to fill up the pages. The ending was abrupt with everything being resolved in a couple of pages.
I'm glad I bought this book (it was a 'Ship' book - I couldn't *not* buy it) and found out what happened to Joat. However don't expect as high quality as 'The City Who Fought' and don't buy it if you are more interested in Simeon/a brainship story, as this is definitly not one; Simeon, and Channa, barely get a mention.

Why? Why did I buy it? more importantly why did Stirling bother writing it? I read and enjoyed city who fought. But this limped along from page one. It seems to have been an exercise in tying up loose ends in the least plausible way possible. The characters in this bear only passing resemblance to the first book and so does the story line...

I was all fired up for a great story here. The City who Fought was an excellent book, action, depth, emotional - it had it all. Unfortunately, all the elements which are missing from this one. Joat was as flat as roadkill, the story was weak and the overall impression was of a hastily put together money spinner. Bad form, Stirling!

This was a well written book one i would have no hesitation in recommending to other readers; it is one i will add to my collection and read again.

Not a patch on previous titles !

Joats back, more mature, less nasty but more realistic.
You gotta read the brainship series. They are all entertaining. Stirling tones down the

Don't buy the Hardback!
I am a diehard Stirling fan, and this is the weakest of his books. "The City who Fought" was wonderful, and this is just uninspired. Read more
