Book Description

11 Jan 2013
Ernle Bradford brings you the storied history of the Knights of St. John - defenders of the poor and sick. Starting with the founding of the Knights during the crusades, Bradford follows the Order for centuries as they move around the world, surviving uprootings from Jerusalem, Rhodes and Malta. The military prowess of the order culminates in the stirring victory over the Turks depicted in the bestselling THE GREAT SIEGE. But after 200 years, internal corruption contributes to the Knights' loss of Malta to Napoleon. But even from those ashes, the Knights rise once again.

5.0 out of 5 stars AMAZING book! 30 April 2014

Excellent book. The author writes extremely clearly and provides many different points of view and offers common speculations onto matters of uncertainty. His writing style keeps you from getting bored, I read almost 100 pages the first day I opened it. Phenomenal overview of the Knights of St. John. He is not afraid to criticize the order's actions in their darkest of times but he also commends them in their many successes. He writes the battles so well that I found myself engrossed in the pages and "rooting" for the Knights to win the day. Recommended highly for anyone interested in the Order's history.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Knights of St John and the Meditteranean 2 Mar 2014

This is a great well written historical account of the Knights Hospitaller of St John . It reads not like a history book but more like a very fast paced novel. The descriptions of the battles, the Bosphorus and the Mediterranean are graphic and anyone with any semblance of an imagination will have no trouble imagining the scenes as depicted by the author. A good follow up to this would be the book on the history of the Knights Templar - Blood and Sword. Also available from Amazon.

This outstanding work clears the fog of misrepresentation that often clouds the societies of medieval warrior-monks. Very well researched and written.
4.0 out of 5 stars An very about good read the Crusades, Knights and the European continental history. 4 Feb 2014

The rating I gave is because I found the book very informative with many anecdotal points. Having read about the homogenous nature of Knightly order in general be they soldier, cavalryman, ministerial, noble or cleric, the individual similarities and differences were enlightening to me when placed into the timeline of the Middle ages and the Crusades.
At first I had some difficulty getting into the "swing" of the enormous amount information. I was glad that I did have some former knowledge of history, and the Dynastic wars of the Aristocracy of the continent before the 10th century in order to grasp the whole picture as to why these individuals were so important to the development of society. I was disappointed to read about the demise of these institutions if you will, but knew their time had come as all things had to change
I can recommend this book to any scholar of history, any romantic, any teacher interested in additional material for his/her students on the subject.
The author did a very good job of bringning it all to life.
