The Sheriff and the Innocent Housekeeper
Historical Western Romance/Novella
Approximately 20,000 Words

When Becky Hamilton is orphaned at the tender age of fourteen, she comes to live with her aunt in Waco and begins work cooking and cleaning for the town’s brooding young sheriff. Mesmerized immediately with his raw masculinity and sinewy strength, her fascination turns to love as the years pass and his honest integrity is revealed.

Jake Cooper manages to ignore his pretty, little orphaned housekeeper for three long years. But when she begins a subtle metamorphosis from girl to woman, he can’t control his consuming need for her any longer. It has been his job to protect the town all these years, but who will protect her from him?

Excerpt:

Becky clutched the plate to her mid-section, standing as still as a rabbit caught in a predators sight, when she saw the way he stood at the door, watching her.

Her hands began the all too familiar shaking, and she heard a roaring sound in her ears and a crashing, splintering noise at her feet. She looked down at the broken plate and in her confusion quickly bent down to retrieve it. A sharp pain in her hand jerked her upright again.
The spell was broken when his deep voice intruded on her consciousness. “Goddammit!”
Becky stood immobile as he pushed off the door and was quickly upon her. He picked up her hand in his. “Becky, what the hell?”
She looked down at his hands holding hers and saw a stream of blood running from a cut on her finger. She realized she had compounded her mistake by cutting her finger. The plate was in shards on the floor. She knew those plates had belonged to his mother. Tears welled in her eyes.
“I’m sorry, Sheriff.”
He pulled her to the kitchen and his large body crowded her against the counter as he held her hand where it was bleeding. His arms wrapped around her from behind, his chest pressed into her back as he held her bleeding finger in the pail of cold water. The water turned pink as she tried not to faint.
His mouth moved to her ear. “You’re more trouble than you’re worth.” He growled the words in her ear. His warm breath caressed her face.
“I’m sorry about your m-mother’s china.” Her voice wobbled from the impact of his nearness.
He reached around and tugged her chin up and around so he could look into her eyes. “You know this isn’t about the goddamn china, don’t you, Becky?”

This is a great old-fashioned romance that may not appeal to many, as apparently western historicals are out of fashion - and also because the female lead is 17. But it totally worked for 1872, and for me.

Becky has been in love with sheriff Jake since she moved to live with her aunt at age 14, but he was 11 years older and though he had noticed her, he was an honourable man. In order to financially help her aunt who'd taken her in, Becky started to cook and clean for Jake, who had kept his distance, but now that she's 17, he tells her that she cannot work for him any more, which devastates her, before she understands why.

Things move very quickly in this tale, due to the setting, and more so because the most eligible young man in town starts to assume that Becky will marry him, so Jake proposes. Well, he mentions that the only way in which they could be deemed acceptable by society is marriage, trying to make Becky see sense, but she's all for it, as she's getting the guy of her dreams. Good on you, Becky!

So, they get married and we have a couple of sensual scenes, totally right for this tale, given the setting and Becky's age. I loved this and I love how the author isn't scared to make her guys Alpha, dominant, hot, sexy and a little un-PC, as that's what makes her tales rock!

Becky moved to Waco, Texas to live with her aunt at the age of fourteen. To help her aunt more financially she began working for the town's sheriff, Jake. As time goes by and she gets older, her feelings are changing for Jake as well as his. Jake has recently started to look at Becky more of a woman than the fourteen year old girl that started housekeeping for him. Now that Jake's feelings have come into play and he is becoming jealous, he needs to do something before he loses Becky.

This was a cute and ok story for me. I had no problem with the storyline, but I think for me, it was the progress of the story that I had a bit of a problem with. Jake was sexy and dominating, while Becky is young and a bit shy and clueless with many things, that is one of the combos that has always worked for my taste. In this particular story as shy as Becky was, she was more in the forefront of the story than Jake was, and I think that is why I felt the progress in certain areas seemed ok. We do get to read about Jake but Becky's thoughts and issues over shadowed the book. I felt as though I did not get to know who Jake really was. Though this is a novella, I wanted to read more about Jake as I did Becky and see more of his perusal of her (the chase is one of the things that makes a book exciting). I still think it was a cute story with a cute concept and still look forward to more books from the author.

Good read. April in OR 3 Jan 2012

The plot pretty much explains the story, sure there could of been more action or jealous scenes but its nice to just read a story without the complications. I like how Jake treated Becky, he's an alpha male and I love to read books where the man is the agressor but he's also got a sensitive side. This was a good read with an epilogue and its rare that you get a ebook for .99 cents that has an ending that made me smile.
Note: the age thing did not bother me due to the fact that this was a "historical" romance story and it was common for an older guy to marry a young women.

This is another great read by Lynda Chance. I don't even read the summary of the stories anymore when it comes to her books. I just download them because I know I'm going to love them! I can't wait to read more of her books.
