Product Description

Product Description

When is the best time to spot a shooting star or a glow worm? Where does a 'ha-ha' get its name? Why were yew trees planted in churchyards? Where would you find a green man or a Sheila-na-gig?

In the 1960s Geoffrey Grigson, a poet and author, travelled around Britain writing the story of the secret landscape all around us. This book, his exquisite classic of the countryside, is the result.

From weathercocks to rainbows, place names and poets to mazes, dene-holes, crypts and sham ruins, via avenues, Roman roads, dewponds and village greens, The Shell Country Alphabet will help you look beyond the familiar sights of our landscape and discover the hidden, magical world that remains, just off the motorway.

About the Author

Geoffrey Grigson was well known as a poet and broadcaster and is perhaps the most distinctive writer on British country life.

Sophie Grigson is a well known food writer and critic - and his daughter.

Very much a product of the 60's, this book is still remarkably relevant today as many of the items described in here are still to be found around the country if one cares to look. Although this book may be seen as yet another of those "list" books that come out at this time of year, this one is worth getting, both because it is an iconic volume in it's own right and because it describes an era before mass car ownership and motorway purgatory, when the Sunday Drive was seen as a real treat.

Format:Paperback
Excellent book written by former Cornwall resident Geoffrey Grigson,
(father of Cookery writer Sophie Grigson) A fascinating compendium of
Country lore and facts from all over Britain, arranged in handy alphabetical
order. Would make a handy gazeteer to carry in the car glovebox. Highly
recommended and a great find, from Standing Stones to folklore and customs,
names for landmarks, holed crosses etc. A little gem !

Fascinating. 22 Jun 2011
Format:Paperback
A fascinating collection of random facts about the British countryside. Pick any page and there'll be something to interest you. Some delightful, short essays scattered throughout as well. A nice book to have around, if you know what I mean.
