Product Description

The Shed Sessions: 1982-1986 comprise the two albums that Zimbabwe's Bhundu Boys recorded at Harare's Shed Studios between 1982 and 1986. It's where Biggie Tembo and the rest of the band developed their jit-jive style and created a classic sound with intricately interlocking guitar parts. Comprised of two LPs, Shabini and Tsvimbodzemoto, this is really the legendary sound of the band, spawning four number one singles at home and establishing their reputation overseas. This CD not only collects the songs from those albums, but adds more, for a total of 28 cuts, all powered by some storming guitar work. But while they show their fire on tracks like "Pachedu," they also take on the feel of more traditional mbira music on the moody "Manhenga." It's ironic that they should hit their creative high point so early in their career, never recapturing the spirit that made this music so remarkable and glittering. From here they'd move to England, but in the '90s everything would fall apart, as members died of AIDS and Biggie Tembo hanged himself after being asked to leave the band. A tragic end that wasn't foreseen in some of the best guitar music to emerge from Africa. ~ Chris Nickson

This album is a complete collection of all the Bhundu Boys' early recordings, made before they were introduced to the rest of the world. This is a must have album for anyone who is already familiar with their music. And for anyone new to Zimbabwean or African music, this is as good a place as any to start your collection.

This is quite simply, fantastic music! On the first CD especially, Rise Kagona's lead guitar shimmers, slices accross, and interweaves effortlessly and impeccably with a vibrant rhythm section, and the result is music of remarkable complexity and sophistication. You can dance along to this if you want, however some of the rhythms are so complex it is as if there are 2 songs being played at the same time. This is music that demands to be listened to, in order to appreciate all its subtleties. Sometimes, for example on the 8 minute Faka Puresha, the music becomes trance-like and mesmerising; at others, it is extraordinarily beautiful; and look out for some brilliant drumming on Pendeke, one of my favourite tracks.

This music gets you everywhere:- compelling rhythmns make your body twitch, sweet sweet guitar lines and riffs weave in and out and the tight vocal hooks get you humming along. So perfect, so beautiful, so happy - the tears will flow down your face. Perfect perfect perfect.

Deadly 3 Mar 2006

These guys were superb musicians by any standards, and they invented a whole new idiom. Everything fits, bass, guitar, voices, drums. It's hard not to wonder what they might have done with more luck and more justice in the world. But this album is still something wondrous and, unfortunately, unique. Buy it and make everyone you know listen to it.
