This gem is a lucid, intelligent and romantic twenty-track take on American standards which far surpasses expectations.

I got the album on the cheap, and the fact that no-one else on Amazon had reviewed it coupled with its absence in most jazz encyclopedias (supposedly not in the top tier of Shearing releases) made me think I'd acquired a cruise-ship easy listening CD full of filler... However, although some of the moods do lean towards cocktail music, this release is a studied and beautiful interpretation of the American songbook. I would liken this to third stream rather than easy listening - note Shearing's quotations of Rachmaninov and Satie - and would wholeheartedly recommend it to fans of Bill Evans and of romantic classical composers. Shearing's impressionistic, fluid playing makes for a memorable and mature album, perfect for quiet evenings in with a bottle of something Spanish and red. (Like wine.)

We're used to hearing George Shearing with his quintet, so it was a real treat to find this CD a few years ago now, of Shearing's piano styling on its own, recorded in 1956 and '57. An added bonus was that only the first 10 tracks had been previously released on LP and the remaining 10 (yes, there are 20 tracks in all!!) were issued for the first time. Perhaps to call this CD `easy listening' would do an injustice to George's inventive piano playing; but it's certainly more in the relaxed style of his CDs with strings than in the jazz style of the quintet. Most of the tracks are of `standards', like `Stella by starlight', `On the street where you live', `Tenderly', `In the still of the night', and so on. But there are some tunes here that were new to me: Frank Loesser's `A tune for humming', Noel Coward's `Sigh no more'. And some others that are rarely heard, like van Heusen and Burke's `So would I', and the Billy Holiday composition `Don't explain'. But what makes this CD unique is the way that Shearing blends fragments of classical works or styles to these popular melodies - like Poulenc in `On the street where you live' and Rachmaninoff in `Tenderly'. Furthermore, we have one `classical' work - Debussy's `Reverie'. A delightful 70 minutes of relaxed piano playing.

The sound for relaxing and working. It reminds me of my studying days when one could listen to this in the background
