The Itch, that damn itch. Gary Westlake's stress levels are causing mayhem. Being on a train that suddenly explodes doesn't help. None of it makes sense. DCI Adrian 'Frankie' Howard just can't work out where everything fits in, and that's not a good thing. It's all just business. Auguste Fredericks has branched out on his own, and it's turning into quite a profitable venture. But only if he is prepared to get his hands dirty. If it aint yours, leave it. Oliver Allen is learning the hard way, if you take what isn't legally yours nothing but trouble is going to come your way. Find out how it all fits in within the pages of the gripping new novel by Colin Payne.

More About the Author

Colin Payne lives in Bedfordshire, England, where he is married to June, and is father to Thomas, Sophie, William and Alice.
He is a relatively new author who has shown himself to be adept at weaving a thrilling tale, incorporating a diverse and genuinely believable cast of characters, who readers have come to love and hate in equal measure.
His first novel 'The Shattered Eagle' introduced the world to Adrian 'Frankie' Howard, and was received well by all who read it, eliciting a variety of positive feedback and recommendations.
Colin has since written and published three further novels, 'There's No Dignity In This', 'No Loose Ends', and 'The Strange Tale Of The Missing Lord', all of which will be sure to satisfy those who enjoyed 'The Shattered Eagle' so much.
He is currently working on his fifth novel, which will hopefully be released in early spring 2014.

4.0 out of 5 stars Needs editing 20 Nov 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is not my usual fare but it kept me turning the pages. A non-suicide bomber blows up a train in London and the hunt is on for the bomber. It all gets a bit complicated after that and the bodies pile up - I don't want to say more than that in case I give anything away. The book jumps about a bit at first giving you the back story of the main protagonists, and whilst it is a bit confusing it is really informative as it rounds out the characters and you feel you really know them by the end of the book.
I've erred on the generous side on the stars as it is a real page turner but this book requires a fair amount of editing to turn it in to a finished product. It's not glaringly obvious as in some books but it's obvious enough to be annoying (especially the French).

Oh dear, yet another book bigged up beyond its real merits in the reviews, presumably by the author's friends. (Check out how the reviews offer very little information about the plot and how this is their only book review by many of the reviewers.) It's a shame, if understandable, how authors try to game the system to get a good review status and boost sales. This seems to be the case here.

It is written rather in the style of a film script, with a prologue set in Afghanistan and then hurtling about different locations including Paris and London (in the aftermath of a terrorist bombing. There are some good ideas here and real pace but it is let down by sloppy technique and spelling errors - boarder for border for example. Eventually I found the untidy quality of the writing getting in the way of my enjoyment of the plot and did not manage to finish it as a result.

In its present form I cannot really recommend this novel. There are lots of thrillers covering the same ground, only better, out there. The author should set his ego aside and get some professional help tidying up the style and spelling mistakes and then he might have the makings of a decent novel.

(As an aside, I do wish Amazon would distinguish between thrillers and murder mysteries - this by the way is a thriller).

5.0 out of 5 stars A cracking good read 13 Aug 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The beginning of the book seemed to jump all over the place, the first five chapters introducing you to the back story of the characters. I'd have given up if some friends hasn't recommended the book, and that would have been a shame.

This book drew me in, it kept me turning the page, wondering what on earth it could come up with next, and leaving me guessing most of the way. Some bits I got, but a lot of it surprised me, in a good way.

It's an incredibly well thought out story, some of the descriptions are too well written in some ways, the scene for the explosion for example made for hard reading, but it came across as very real and accurate.

There's a conspiracy throughout the book, you never know who's real, who's on the side of the bad guys, and who's going to die next.

It's one of the best thrillers I've read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great read! 13 Jan 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Once I got through the first few chapters where you are 'introduced' to the characters, I was utterly gripped. It was pacey, the storyline was believable, though a little gruesome at times and the characters made you both care about them and be annoyed by them, which is always the sign of a good book. Looking forward to seeing how DCI 'Frankie' Howard evolves in subsequent books. What a great first novel.

5.0 out of 5 stars 10/10 Fantastic 31 Dec 2012

A truly fast moving, gripping thriller, I didn't want to put the book down, a real page turner. A terrific storyline full of suspense and a touch of ingeniously placed humour. I absolutely loved it. I am eagerly awaiting the next book from this very talented author.

4.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining thriller, but high body count. 14 April 2014
By DJW13
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is an entertaining thriller, but has a high body count. I nearly didn't get further than the start but was pleased I kept going. It was difficult to work out who to trust, as many supposedly good guys could be paid to do almost anything. Our reluctant heroes, Oli and Gary, plus their families were put in very difficult positions.

For me the ending was a disappointment, and I did not take to "Frankie" Howard, but may well read the next in the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome 31 Dec 2012
By ebony
Format:Kindle Edition
What an extraordinary book. I couldn't put it down, despite being more of a Jane Austen fan than a thriller fan. The author has obviously got immense talent. Each story line introduced was so powerful and thought provoking that they stuck rigidly in ones mind and didn't become confusing. I hope it is made into a film and can't wait for Colin's next work of genius.

Having read some of the other reviews I have to give this 5 stars, this is my personal feeling as I really enjoyed this book. It is a bit all over the place at the start, but stay with it and it is worth it. The plot seems to jump about a bit but it all ties in nicely. Found a few spelling and grammar errors, but nothing that I wasn't able to correct in my head as I read the book. It did not spoil the thread of the story at all. The characters are brought to life in a way that draws you in and you can just see yourself in some of the shop floor incidents. Some of the chapter titles brought a smile to my face and I even had a chuckle at a couple of them. It was also nice to read a story based about life in the UK and how certain events in the world can affect us here. I look forward to more form this author.
