Book Description

Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water… When you dive into the sea, do you ever wonder what’s down there, beneath you, poised to take an inquisitive bite? Author of Jaws Peter Benchley and film director Steven Spielberg certainly did, for below the waves lies a world we neither see nor understand; an alien world where we are but the briefest of visitors. The Shark that Walks on Land uncovers tales of ancient and modern mariners, with stories of sea serpents, mermaids and mermen, sea dragons, and the true identity of the legendary kraken. But this book contains more than just a medley of maritime myths and mysteries for marine biologists; it celebrates wonderful discoveries by blending the unknown and the familiar in an entertaining miscellany of facts, figures and anecdotes about the myriad creatures that inhabit the oceans. Along the way we meet the giants, the most dangerous, the oddballs and the record breakers – and the shark that really does walk on land!

5.0 out of 5 stars Really wonderful :D 22 Oct. 2014

Great book all round. It comprises of explaining legends and possible miss identifications, and all the more recent weird and wonderful scientific discoveries right up until the 2013 flying squid! The chapters are short so you are not totally overwhelmed with information and are broken up into characteristics, notable species and ocean areas roughly.

The writer also includes the Latin names for all the animals that are discussed which is really useful when wanting to research anything further. The little sketched illustrations add a certain nice quality to the book I appreciated, so with a quick glance I could be reminded roughly of what fish the paragraph was discussing, as there are a lot of worms and squat lobsters etc.

Over all this just keeps my love of the ocean and everything peculiar in it alive and keeps me wanting more information, fantastic contribution! It provides both up to date facts and history of events discoveries and species. Really is a wonderful book :D

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Read 30 July 2015

This is a must for anybody who likes nature in all its forms. The tales in here are easy to read, very interesting and you find yourself wondering if it is possible that these are here today and if this is fiction, but they are nearly all true, in truth they could all be true as we have not ventured to the deepest oceans and have no idea of what lies down in the dark ocean. A fantastic enjoyable book.
