Product Description

Review

'the most original new fiction of this kind ... equally appealing to boys. Here be dragons, sorcery and battles, but Kaaberbol's thrilling and thoughtful series is really about perceiving the limitations and deceits of adulthood.' (The Times )

'[A] fine novel ... The term 'page-turner' is often used but not always justified. It is deserved here, tenfold. I really, really couldn't put the book down.' (The School Librarian )

'Full of passion' (Julia Eccleshare, The Guardian )

Product Description

Who dares look into her eyes? The Shamer is feared and resented for her power to unmask the soul’s darkest secrets and crimes. Dina has inherited this gift from her mother, but to her it feels more like a curse.

Dina's mother has just begun to teach her how to use her power when she is called away by the Court of the Ravens, to aid in the detection of the murderer of four members of the royal family. Dina's mother does not return. Instead, Dina is fetched by a stranger, Drakan; finding him able to look into her eyes calmly and innocently, she goes with him.

But, arriving at the House of the Ravens, she finds her mother captive, and she herself no more than a pawn in a terrifying game of blackmail. Terrified, Dina escapes. But she is pitted against an implacable enemy: Drakan and his army of dragons... (20050226)

A friend of mine suggested this book for its use of detail, and it is wonderful-- I'm so jealous of Kaaberbol's use of English because she has translated her own books from the original Danish. I can only imagine how good it is in the original language. This series is quality and a must-read-- I'm sure that it will become very popular over the year with word-of-mouth. It is hard to put them down (so far, the 2nd and 3rd are just as good as the 1st), and the characters are so real despite an imaginary world.
Kaaberbol is right: in the center of every fantasy is truth, and that is what makes her books so gripping and hard to put down.

An awazing series! 28 Mar 2012

I started reading these novels when I was very young. I read them in the original language, Danish, since I come from Denmark.

These are one of my favorite fantasy series of all time!
Lene writes so beautively, and you kinda get addicted to knowing what happens next. The headcharacter, Dina, is very likeable, and I could deffinitely identify with her. A lovely and sometimes frightening story filled with love, danger, supernatural powers, responsibility and hope.

I will never forget these books, since they're a big part of my childhood, but I will absolutely read them all again!
Read them, and you won't be disappointed, and I think you'll be surprised by the story, since it's nothing like you'd expect.
