Product Description

In this sequel to "The Red Thread", the sexy Regency-style romance set in the exotic East, Charlotte Macleod is nineteen, pregnant, and alone in 1842. She is fleeing a scandalous liaison with her married Chinese lover, a liaison which would bring ruin on him, herself, and her brother, Robert, the police chief of Singapore. When Tigran Manouk, forty, and the richest merchant in Batavia, capital of the Dutch East Indies, asks for her hand in marriage, the choice is no choice. Through loss and pain, Charlotte will find a way to make a life with a man she does not love in a town she does not understand. Until she returns to Singapore, to the town where the man she loves waits for her, to face the hardest decision of her life. This is Vol.2 in "The Straits Quartet".

The sequel to The Red Thread continues in Java with a revealing insight into the development of, and life in Batavia (now modern Jakarta) and is again notable for historical accuracy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Lagoon view 11 July 2013

I really enjoyed this book set around the emergence of Singapore. The mixture of characters from quite a number of different nationalities, their quirks and sense of adventure grab you into the story and keep you turning the pages to find out what is going to happen next. Upon finding out that this book is one of four following the main characters Charlotte and Zhen I immediately ordered the other 3 and am now reading the first book - The Red Thread.

5.0 out of 5 stars An eyeopening series 19 Aug 2013

If you ever wanted to know what life was like during 19th century Singapore, this Straits Quartet series gives a vivid picture of the social mores and cultural practices of the English colonialists, Chinese coolies, the Malays, Indians, etc, in the form of an impossible love story between a half-breed Scotswoman and a Chinese coolie. A tumultous love story that didn't end in a final reunion until several children and marriages to others later. I bought the last book, The English Concubine, then discovered it was a series of four books, and downloaded the first 3 books immediately. Read them all in a week, couldn't put them down. Being a third generation Chinese, it has helped me understand what it was like being a sinkeh (a newcomer to SEA Asia), the country as it was then, and how all the races intermingled with each other. I hope to see more books like this from the author in the future.

I simply could not put this book down. Ms Farnham has managed to combine her research and knowledge of the history of the area into a spellbinding novel. I have read all three of her novels and anxiously await the last one of the quartet.
