Product Description

Terence Morgan stars in this 1959 British production. Directed and co written by John Lemont which was distributed by Rank. Morgan plays "Augie" a crook just released from prison and intent on getting his rackets back from "Gollar" (Harry H Corbett). Augie sets up, down and out photographer (Donald Pleasence) in a studio with blackmail in mind. Well shot, this gritty crime flic is a must for crime buffs with a good supporting cast, Bill Owen, Robert Beatty and Hazel Court, whose first role in 1944 was a tipsy champagne drinker and her last role, in 1981 was a champagne drinker!

Well done Renown. I have waited for a release of this solid B plus film from 1959 for a very long time, and Renown have not let me down. An excellent print, picture and sound, a cast list (sadly not nearly complete, but the important names are there), a cast that does very well, led by a very nasty Terence Morgan, and the very beautiful Hazel Court in one of her better leading roles. Ably supported by Bill Owen, Gene Anderson, and the eponymous Larry Taylor (where would British "gangster" films have been without him? A sort of male Marianne Stone, if you get my meaning (ie they both appeared in 100's of films)). Harry H corbett is the really bad guy and he tries hard, but, whilst it's sad to say, he was "harold" before the character was invented. The plot involves Morgan coming out of 3 years jail, knowing Corbett has taken over his crim Empire, and how he sets out, with a fine, typical perf from, Donald Pleasence, and Bill Owen as his ex cell mate (Owen is rather good too). Plenty of action tho the violence isn't too explicit, a little bit of sauciness, and Hazel in a bathing costume. I enjoyed all 89', and whilst I just cannot quite give it 5 stars, it has a definite 4 an is highly recomended to fans of Renown and British "B" plus films of the period, and of course, all Hazel Court fans of whom there are.....Enjoy! (Oh and take pleasure in spotting Leila Williams, Angela Douglas, and I swear, Jackie Collins!). That is now all!

I can't quite share the enthusiasm of my fellow reviewer for "The Shakedown" - I was expecting to enjoy it more than I did. The plot is yet another expose of sordid, tawdry London vice rackets, so popular with British film makers of this era (I like Diana Dors' "Passport to shame", for instance, much better than this). Terence Morgan is at his most nasty, without in this instance any redeeming features to his character, and Harry H. Corbett, as his chief adversary, somehow didn't register with me as a leading criminal. He still sounded like Harold Steptoe!. The best performance came from glamourous Hazel Court, and it was interesting to spot Jackie Collins, sister of Joan, who has one line of dialogue!

The plot seemed to me to be unremittingly sordid, and actually pretty obvious - who are the moles infiltrating Morgan's racket - with no humour or sympathy for anyone involved.

The disc itself is well up to the best of Renown's high standards, excellent audio and visual quality, and is worth a look if you like British B movies. If you don't expect too much, you will enjoy it at its own level.

Any film with Terence Morgan and Hazel Court has to be half good and watching this black and white film makes you realise just how good they and those films were. I watched this many years ago on TV and when I saw that Renown had issued it I wondered if it would be as I remembered...it was. The sleazy world of blackmail, gangsters and not so nice blokes makes for an interesting viewing. Look at who else appears in the film too. These were the days when a clutch of actors appeared in many films a year and were familiar just as TV types are today. The print used is clear and the sound good. I particularly like Sheila Buxton singing "Shakedown" in the club sequence and at the close of the picture. Hazel is sweetness but with a dangerous edge and Terence Morgan plays these characters so well. Robert Beatty as the policeman is good and again a big name still making films many years into a career that was to last into the 1980s. John Salew as the blackmailed bank manager makes for a pathetic type but he gets his own back and Terence Morgan's character should have known better..All told a great film and well worth 4 stars. Good price too.
