Book Description

The 13th book in JR Ward's Sunday Times bestselling Black Dagger Brotherhood series

From the Inside Flap

Two brothers bound by more than blood fight to change a brutal destiny in the heart-wrenching new novel of the Black Dagger Brotherhood

Trez 'Latimer' doesn't really exist. And not just because the identity was created so that a Shadow could function in the underbelly of the human world. Sold by his parents to the Queen of the S'Hsibe as a child, Trez escaped and has spent years on the run from a destiny of sexual servitude. He's never had anyone he could rely on . . . except for his brother, iAm.

iAm's sole goal has always been to keep his brother from self-destructing - and he knows he's failed. When the Chosen Serena enters Trez's life the male begins to turn things around . . . but by then it's too late. The pledge to mate the Queen's daughter comes due and there is nowhere to run, nowhere to hide, and no negotiating.

Trapped between his heart and a fate he never volunteered for, Trez must decide whether to endanger himself and others - or forever leave behind the female he's in love with. Then an unimaginable tragedy strikes and changes everything. Now Trez must find a reason to go on or risk losing himself and his soul forever. And iAm, in the name of brotherly love, is faced with making the ultimate sacrifice . . .

This is one of those books which divides readers of a long-lasting series - in fact, much has been written about this title since its publication and many readers are very unhappy with what the author has chosen to do (although some tweets and reviews I have read seem to be more than a little overdramatic - it's only a book !). It seems that the author has established a way of writing novels in this series - basically they are love stories in an urban fantasy world where the men are tough on the outside, very protective to their women and everyone is flawed - and the vampires are at war with other supernatural creatures. More recent books in the series have moved away from just concentrating on one pairing and become more involved in developing themes in her world and the author has also taken the opportunity to revisit some of the pairings from the earlier books in the light of events in her world. I have enjoyed the latter novels immensely as the themes and storylines become more complex and stretch across more than one book and the novels veer away from a simple romance formula.

In this book (best not read until you have worked your way through the previous twelve) JR Ward has written a love story rather than a romance. I don't want to spoil the ending for anyone who hasn't read this book yet but she actually does something quite courageous for an author with an established series when writing about Trez and Serena. The fact that the love story at the centre of the book doesn't end in the accepted, and expected, way makes for a stronger book in my opinion but I can see how it would not be to everyone's taste. I think that, after twelve books of more or less conventional love stories, we are ready for this - I liked what the author had done.

i adore the Black Dagger Brotherhood books, some more than others, but really had trouble envisaging Trez and iAm as main leads in this series. As the story started i saw immediate comparisons between the lead Selena and Mary and initially thought this was going to a bit predictable and similar to the latter's story in "Lover Eternal".
I am happy to say i was totally wrong. the story is unique and individual and. i can honestly, though surprisingly, say that this is one of the best books in this series! i truly commend the talent of this author. the characterisation was brilliant and the emotional roller coaster i went on left me speechless. i think i cried more with this book than any other. the ending was unexpected and perhaps not with the most conventional 'happily ever after' for everyone and perhaps not all that happy for some. however, had the author done much different i fear the book would have been too reminiscent of other stories in this series and it deserved to stand out in itself. it has a strong storyline and as always smaller sub stories mixed in,which i liked as they only enhanced the main story and this time showed the knock on effect of certain events and differing points of view.
i think to read this book you would need some knowledge of the world the author has created so i wouldn't recommend it as a stand alone novel. i think its an extremely wonderful addition to the series and has in my opinion given the series a fresh burst of energy.
i cant wait for the next book in the series, THE BEAST,which will be another story about Rhage.
** for people who may not know there is to be a spin off series, THE BLACK DAGGER LEGACY, the first book,'BLOOD KISS' will be featuring Paradise whom we meet in this book.it is due for release in December 2015.

I am an addict of the Black Dagger Brotherhood. JR Ward never puts a foot wrong. I thought that she could not better The King but The Shadows is exceptionally good. The story of Trez and Serena started in previous books and I wondered where it could go. I cried through a packet of tissues. I'am is a wonderfully unselfish character, always looking out for his brother, it was great to see things work out happily for him.
I thought at first that this was going to be the tie up of all loose ends and maybe the swansong of the Brotherhood but now I am now waiting impatiently to see what happens with Xcor and the BoB's and maybe Assail has more to do. Long life and inspiration to J.R. Ward, my very favourite author.

I didn't think the BDB series could get any better how wrong was I. Could not put this book down once I started reading, the story about the shadow brothers Trez and IAm was beautifully written, it will have you laughing with the brothers and crying with them too.

All the usual faces were in it and some new ones introduced. Cannot wait for the next series to come out. Highly recommended author and series

5 stars. Amazing. One of the best BDB books. It is not just a story of two people, almost everyone makes an appearance. The main characters are beautifully written. The love these two have for each other is wonderful and beautiful and soul deep. Everyone can see it and is touched by it. I cried buckets

I wasn't sure how this book was going to go, but I really enjoyed it. The. Brothers were all there, there was romance, action, pain, tears everything! I loved IAm`s story, so beautiful and Trez and Selena was incredibly heartfelt and devastatingly intense. There was so much happening but it flowed beautifully. I found the intermixed storylines easy to follow and I really liked meeting the new characters to lead into the Legacy books. Knowing the next book is going to be about Rhage, called The Beast, I'm now counting the days for that one. At least we get the first BDB Legacy book in December to keep us going.
