I just finished Book 4 and I'm wondering if I should wait to do this review. I'm still a little speechless :-) Let me start by saying that if you have NOT read previous books in the series you need to start with Book 1. These books are not stand-alone and you'll want to start at the beginning. That said, it's worth the journey - I can't wait for the final book - book 5.

*** WARNING: Some Book 3 spoilers ahead. ***

So, on to talking about The Shadows of Grace. Things looked pretty grim at the end of Book 3. The city had been routed, the refugees were fleeing for their lives, and, as the icing on the cake, a portal to let even MORE nasty into the world was now open. This is where Book 4 picks up.

As with the previous books, the fight scenes are very well-written - some of the best I've read. At the same time, if you've followed the books from the beginning, you can see the growth of the writer - characters are more fleshed out, dialog is smoother, the work as a whole is just one step better. Perhaps that's just my perception since I've watched the characters from the beginning, so to speak, but I don't think so. Even supporting characters are vibrant. Queen Annabelle, for example, even though we don't see a lot of her, she makes a big impact and even in her limited "stage time" you get a good idea of what sort of person she is.

The Shadows of Grace will not disappoint - it's a beautiful work of fantasy and it continues what was started back in The Weight of Blood. We've moved one step further along in the story but so much further, at the same time. This series will be a classic in the fantasy genre and I can't wait for the finale.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great instalment in the half-orc series 14 Sep 2012

If you've read any of my other reviews you'll know I am a big fan of this author. You know what? I'd love to be able to pinpoint why. I think it's many things. His heroes aren't some meek and mild farmer boy who suddenly discovers that they're the saviour of the world with special powers, as with some books (although some tales like this can still captivate.) His characters have been trained into the life they have. His heroes aren't safe (he has a penchant for killing off characters to rival George R.R. Martin) and this keeps you on your toes. Most of all, his characters are likeable, even Thren and Velixar. His magic systems and religions are interesting and the world he creates is engrossing.
I won't give too much away but if, like me, you've been a little confused about why Karak wants everyone and everything to die on Dezrel (something I took time to get my head around, I mean why? What's the point? If there's no-one alive to dominate and oppress, why bother? Is it just that he wants everyone to join him in the Abyss where he can lord it over them? What about Ashhurs followers heh?) I think that Karak's motivation becomes a little easier to understand in this and the last book.
I will probably say this on every review but I spend a lot of money on books and Dalglish's are right up there with other books in terms of enjoyment but not nearly as expensive (cough, cough, ahem "A Dance with Dragons" which probably cost me the same as ALL of Dalglish's novels put together AND I enjoyed the Half-Orc, Watcher and Paladins series more. Seriously George R.R. Martin.. throw us a bone and let some of your heroes win!)
All I can say is buy David Dalglish's books (also, at the moment, some are free so what have you got to lose?) You will not be disappointed.

Still enjoying this story haven't managed to finish it as of yet for i have been very busy and haven't had as much time to read as i would like. Very exciting storyline can be quite gruesome at times. Very keen to see how it will all end will qurrah escape from his brutal way of life and join his brother and fight for the right side for good and save whats left of the world.
