This book was a fascinating and compelling read; hats off to you Douglas Simpson!
You are thrown straight into the action so no need to persevere with laborious back story and character profiling, however you will still find yourself developing compassion for the characters and you will become absorbed by their plight!
Simpson's expertise in dealing with suspense, coupled with the extensive research and knowledge that Simpson has clearly acquired for the novel ensures that the story moves with momentum, whilst still maintaining a level of detail and historical reference that does the era justice.
Was also very impressed with Simpson's ability to depict wartime setting in such a way that was not heavy-going or saturated with detail, perfect for someone like me whose knowledge of 1940's Europe is limited!
Would have really liked the author to include some sort of map at the beginning of the novel to help me track the movements of the main protagonists!
After reading this book I was left pondering on the fragility of life and the bravery and courage shown by those who valiantly fought against the uprising. This story is thought-provoking and has the potential to induce quite an emotional impact on the reader.
