Product Description

Product Description

As Beth Chatto's reputation for choosing plants for problem areas grew, she started to run out of space to experiment with plants for dry shade, so when the 1987 winds ripped through a small wooded area next to her garden, she jumped at the opportunity to expand. This book tells the story of her woodland garden. In her inimitable style, she takes us on a guided tour of the maze of paths that weave in and out of the trees. Illustrated with sumptuous photographs taken by Steve Wooster, this will be an extraordinarily beautiful book that conjures up the cool dark mystery of the forest as well as making gardeners think again about that dark, dry spot at the bottom of their garden.

About the Author

This is a lovely read, with some gorgeous photos. However, the description doesn't make it clear that this the story of the garden through a year - it doesn't have much information in it about shade loving plants, only a small section at the end. If I had known this I probably wouldn't have bought it.

I completely disagree with the previous reviewer!

The book is exactly what the title says - an account of shade-loving plants for year-round interest. Beth Chatto is a garden creator of national and international reknown who has gardened on the same site for more than 40 years. She describes in considerable detail, the growing preferences and appearance of a wide range of shade-loving plants, to give delight in the garden throughout the year. It is a personal account and beautifully written. The descriptions leap out from the page and the whole book is inspirational for anyone wishing to create a garden in shade. There is a plant list at the end but the main joy and purpose of buying this book is to reap the wisdom of such a fine gardener.

This book will be of help to beginner and experienced gardener alike and will bring enormous pleasure to both.
