BBC Review

Considering that the world's most notorious punks lasted all of 3 years and released only one proper album, it's amazing that a 3 CD set could make it to the shelves at all. But here it is, dripping with snotty attitude, even after 25 years. Don't be fooled, just because John Lydon seems to have swapped irony for greed, this three chord blast still sounds as angry as ever.

Of course the usual suspects are here again: the Never Mind The Bollocks tracks, the superb Spunk bootleg demos (step forward and take a bow Chris Spedding!) and the entire legendary Screen On The Green gig. They're all presented in glorious new digital garb and remind some of us of a certain age that simply jumping up and down on the spot was once considered dancing. Let's just not remember what else we did at gigs back then, eh? Added to this are the b-sides, outtakes and cover versions essential to any disciple of the un-fab four. It does the heart good to hear the wondrously dishevelled intro to the Stooges "No Fun", with Rottens snarled "Rrrrright, ere we go naaaooww..." A sociology lecture, indeed.

The only sour notes are struck by the inclusion of some completely unrecognizable versions of "The Flowers Of Romance" which bear absolutely no resemblance to the later PIL track and the relentlessly grim closing number from the last gig at the Winterland Ballroom, "Belsen Was A Gas". At least their singer knew that the days of Malcolm McLaren's situationist media provocation were well and truly over. If only the other three had had the sense to walk away. Their later (mis)adventures are thankfully omitted here.

So, a tasteful (whoever would have linked that word to the Pistols in 1977?) footnote to this unholy Jubilee and a worthy excuse to fill that gap in your record collection. Chris Thomas' productions (i.e. the singles and first album) still stand as some of the most visceral, thrilling, older generation-hating music of all time. If you're a first time buyer, the legend still holds true; if you're an ageing punk re-living those glory days, crank it up to 11 and annoy your kids for a change. Destroy!! --Chris Jones

So, why buy a three disc box set from a band that only produced one album in their life time?
I can give you a few good reasons.
In this box set you will hear the Bollocks album (all songs in order) in crisp, clean, clear sound. In fact the version of Bollocks supplied herein is the best sounding version of the album yet released on CD.
Fans of their singles will have reason to be happy as well. The A sides are included on the first disc as part of the album and the B sides are supplied, in order, to round out disc one.

As we all know several CDs have been released containing demo versions of these songs. The song demos included on disc two help the listener hear and understand how the the Bollocks album took shape and grew into it's completed form. The listener will hear the evolution of this classic record.

Disc three features live recording from several sources. It starts with The Pistols show at Screen on the Green and is filled out with songs recorded at different shows. This disc is of varying sound quality, but in most cases the rawness adds to the appeal of hearing The Pistols play live.

All three discs have an unlisted bonus track at the end. These tracks close out each disc in style and give the purchaser something that is in short supply these days, value for your money.

The booklet gives the reader plenty of information; the group's history, a touring itinerary, images of the original single sleeve artwork, song lyrics and tons of photos.

What this box, quite rightfully, does not include are songs not recorded with Johnny Rotten. A copy of The Great Rock And Roll Swindle will amiably supply those songs.

I would recommend this box set for The Pistols fans, rock music archivists/historians, and those who have heard the stories and want to know the facts behind the legend. The answers are right here and in the proper context.

Good buy for enthusiast/collector as it contains the spedding demos and mike thorne demos in uncut glory (for a change). A Thorne demo appears at the end of each CD (not mentioned on sleeve). Proof the band could play, hairs on back of my neck stand when I listen to the power and (this will upset the Sid Vicious type angry sex pistols fan) funky-ness of the early Pistols. The rejected Thomas "Anarchy" is a joy - better guitar solo's in my opinion. Shame Steve Jones' "Audition" comment is tagged on to the wrong "Pretty Vacant".

This is one of the best thing I've ever bought! You can have this book-shaped box with 61 Pistols' songs and some information in the text. Also, you have some lyrics and GREAT photos of the band...
DISC 1 in a few words, you have all the Pistols' songs...
DISC 2 (demos & rarities) is literally amazing... you can hear the earlier version of "God Save the Queen", called "No future" (really different!), 2 versions of "Anarchy in the UK", 2 versions of "Submission" and other intersting song such as "Problems" and "Substitute" (one of my favourite). After track 22 (submission) wait some seconds 'cos there's a ghost instumental track....
DISC 3 is the live disc, very interesting, you can also find "Flower of Romance" and the WONDERFUL "Belsen was a gas"
An Italian Pistols BIG fan.
