Product Description

"The Seventh Gate" is the thrilling conclusion to the "New York Times" bestselling "Death Gate" "Cycle" by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman. In this tale of treachery, power, and heroism, Alfred, Haplo, and Marit embark on a journey of death and discovery as they seek to enter the dreaded Seventh Gate. Encountering enemies both old and new, they unleash a magic no power can control, damning themselves to an apocalypse of unimagined proportion in a final struggle between good and evil.

The Best Of The Lot? 23 Nov 1997
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
What can one say about Margeret Weis and Tracy Hickman?Together theyve given us the readers the Dragonlance Saga which has left us completely spellbound! And yet they simply do it again with the Death Gate Cycle which has left us simply gasping for breath and craving for more! The Seventh Gate being the last book of the series, concludes the tragic tale of the Sartans and Patryns. The reader can REALLY feel the anguish and hopelessness of the situation, and the authors have done a fantastic job portraying the images. The series itself also in some ways realtes to real life dilemmas like racism and prejidous as with the case of the Sartans and Patryns. In this epic finale, the Sartan and Patryns finally realise that they must put aside their own differences and battle thier true enemy and strive for survival. This book is indeed a tragic tale, and yet again Margaret WEis and Tracy Hickman have shown that they really do belong at the top of the mountain! A MUST have for all fantasy collectors, the entire saga and this book simply cant be put down!

While I loved the first six books in the series, I was really disappointed by the ending- it seems to rely on many, many Deus Ex Machina additions to resolve the conflicts set up in the first six books... In particular, I didn't like the circumstances of Haplo's reappearance ("Just kidding, everybody! Group hug!"), and was very disappointed at the circumstances of Sang-drax's destruction.

Honestly, it seemed to me as if Wies and Hickman didn't really know how to end the series, so they just threw something together at the last minute. There are at least one or two major plot holes in this one. While I'd like to stress that it's not a BAD book, it's also definitley not the best in the series.

The four self-contained novels were all good (especially 2 and 3) and book six really was a tour de force as regards action and adventure, told by those who do it best. This final volume, somewhat slimmer and lacking energy, is nonetheless a worthy conclusion to a fine series (although the Death Gate Cycle remains, for me, the least great of all W+H's series). Alfred once more provides the comic relief (something lacking somewhat in many other modern fantasy novelists' works) while having a depth and complexity equal to Haplo's.

But by saying this is not as strong as, say, Rose of the Prophet or Darksword is no depreciation to W+H's work. This is the worst of the best, which is still several thousand leagues ahead of their nearest rival. Read it and see if you don't agree!

Margret and Tracy are two of the best authors today writting fantasy novels. I simply could not put these books down, nor wait for the next in the series. Pure enjoyment!
